For the few of us addicted to the pipes of Robert Marx, there is a line between the originals made in New York City from 1934 to 1954 and Mastercraft era pipes made after 1954, most marked France or Italy.
When Mastercraft bought out Marx they kept him on as a salesman for over twenty years until he retired.
I was able, thanks to my friends not bidding, to win this most unusual Yacht shaped large Marxman for $18 delivered that looks as “Marxy” as any 34-53 era Marx ever made except it has a 14K rolled gold band and it’s a large yacht.
It even has a little Marx style carving to cover flaws.
It’s my rumination this is a transitional pipe made after the 1954 sale but still in New York City.
We’ll see more when it arrives.
Note the dark reddish brown color a Marxman gets quickly after break in.
But Marx pipes generally weren’t fancy shapes with 14K RGP bands in the larger sizes.
This one is unusual, for sure.
