Interesting, I've always hoped someone would make a compilation and analysis of Holmes' pipe smoking.

Very enjoyable. It appears that maybe Holmes and Watson smoked for a quick powerful effect of nicotine. This is in contrast to movies and plays where they are seen to be slowly enjoying a nice bowl by the fire. Nigel Brice, who plays Watson along side Basil Rathbone in the old movies, is clearly a real pipe smoker and is enjoying his pipes while filming.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes is certainly a much more complex character than the Holmes of the old movies. There are human flaws and conflicts (addiction, sexuality conflicts etc.) in Doyle's creation that make Holmes a much more engaging and believable personality.

This piece is really well-written, tight and well edited. It gives information that can take

a lot more gathering from multiple sources. Someone said of the writer William Maxwell

that he labors for the ease of the reader; this writer did as well.
