As I have stated before I usually use the 3-step method when packing and the draw feels, to me, like drinking through a straw. But lately I have noticed that with each "sip", "draw" whatever you want to call it I hear the sucking sound of air in the bowl of the pipe. I have tried packing a little looser and tighter. Tighter seems to work better for a bit, but then I have to constantly keep drawing to keep it lit. Looser just makes the problem worse. Any suggestions?

I agree with Bob, sounds to me like you are drawing too hard. If you are smoking gloopy Aromatics they will get wet and hot if you hit them hard.

Try all the other packing methods...even if they seem absurd. I've learned a lot about packing tobacco from all of them. No matter what packing method you choose, your tobacco should always be firm but springy and offer no more resistance than a cigarette when drawn.

One possibility may be that the draft hole is caking up or over, and the diameter may have been diminished, restricting air flow.

You might try giving the cake a good going over, and using a bristle pipe cleaner, or better yet one of the those pipe brushes to give the draft hole a good cleaning too.

I've come to the conclusion that the proper technique for filling and smoking a pipe is the one that works best for you.Try different things until you find it.Then the fun begins. If you need help you're in the right place to get it.

Is it a sucking sound or a gurgling sound? My suggestion would be to make sure the tobacco isn't too moist, if it's gurgling it could be because the tobacco is too moist. Also I'd say try different packing methods. Different methods work better for some people and sometimes some pipes smoke better with a different packing method. Definitely give the pipe a good cleaning like Lawrence said to make sure that's not the problem.
