I have never physically seen a set of dentures close up but last night I saw a set on TV and it made me wonder, do denture wearers suffer any depreciation of flavour when smoking a pipe?
I ask as the upper set seemed to have a plate that entirely covers the roof of the mouth which along with the tongue has taste receptors. That would suggest to me that a wearer doesn't get the full flavour of whatever blend is being smoked.
Have I got this right or am I way off the mark?
Regards,
Jay.

I wear full dentures (upper & lower). To get any flavor I have to smoke a strong blend and even then it's not all that great. Most of my pipe smoking is done when I'm not wearing dentures. One reason why I hardly ever smoke my pipe when away from the house.

I also wear full dentures and found that there is a difference between smoking with them and without them. To me it's not that big of a deal though as I retrohale or snork a lot and pick up more of the flavor that way. I do admit I have tried some tobaccos and just didn't get all the hype about them until I smoked them without my dentures.

I think Duncan Briars was the frontrunner when it comes to briars with dental mouthpieces,

but also Orlik, Hardcastle and Peteron etc. made them.

I have some Falcon stems with the dental mouthpiece. Their great for when I'm wearing my dentures and clenching, but if I don't have my dentures in they really hurt the roof of my mouth because of the protrusion at the end of the stem. I use the regular stems when not wearing my dentures.

About a year ago, I was fitted for upper dentures. But they don't have the plate that covers the roof of the mouth. They are a fairly recent innovation, made out of some kind of super tough material, they are held on only by my few remaining upper teeth. Works great for eating and for smoking a pipe.
