As my wife and I are now retired, we enjoy taking small trips which means staying in a hotel for a night or two.

Just to set the scene, I am an older Gentleman, nicely dressed and well groomed at all times with Iron Gray Hair and a Col. Saunders style Moustache and Beard.

I tend to get up early and once I am ready to meet the day, I take my insulated coffee travel mug to the breakfast area to fill it with coffee and flavoured cream and take it outside to the designated smoking area along with my rather fancy cane and my Kindle E-reader to greet the day.

And without fail, the early morning walkers/joggers will notice me and come over to start a conversation.

Mostly of me reminding them of old memories of a family elder sitting quietly with a newspaper and enjoying a pipe.

One of my favorite encounters was a gentleman that came over and said something to this affect....

"Good morning...

It seems like everyday I come out for my morning jog and there are people here smoking nasty smelling cigarettes or even worse Cigar's!

While I don't know about pipe tobacco, I can tell you that whatever you are smoking smell's wonderful and if you don't mind me saying, this moment I am reminded of my Grandfather and his pipe."

Anyone here have any similar experiences?

BTW, I was enjoying a blend called Autumn Evening with a nice Maple Syrup scent.

I mostly smoke at home, but on the occasion that I smoke in public and I get any reaction, it's almost always a positive one. There are a number of forum members who will post about having been allowed to smoke their pipes in non-smoking areas, and so on.

I get the “smells like grandpa” a lot too. I also just seem to be the sort of guy who attracts people who want to talk. I’ve posted many times about trying to enjoy my pipe when someone decides to set down and spill their guts about something. So yeh, I’ve been there. Probably my pipe attracts them, because I am definitely not a talkative guy in real life.

I’ve had similar experiences myself! I think the pipes fascinate people! My wife thinks it’s hilarious that she always finds me having conversations with total strangers!

I’ve been on the other end of this conversation. I was a mail man for many years, at the end of my route I delivered mail to a retirement home. Every day, without fail, there was an old black gentleman that would always great me there and we held a conversation the entire time I was there. He almost always had a pipe hanging out of his mouth (the aroma was divine), he dressed slick and had a fancy cane too. It was this man that finally got me into smoking a pipe, I looked forward to seeing him every day, he became a good friend of mine, he even gifted me an old Sasieni pipe.

Memories.

I get very few negative reactions. In fact, I've only had one negative reaction to my pipe smoke.

Curiously, I've had quite a few people ask me if it's "actual, real tobacco," or if it "has nicotine." It's so closely associated with a quaint and comforting image that non-smokers don't generally associate smoking a pipe with anything negative. Usually.

Gentleman, I'm getting tired of policing posts with political humor, whatever. In the next instance, the perp is getting a 90 day ban. This is the warning to the group. Keep that stuff on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, My Space etc, anywhere but here.

Above language maybe too hi-falutin.

What I mean is stop, already, bringing up shit, farts, buttholes and dicks. Yes, sometimes there are good jokes that occur naturally, but just throwing in any of those things is beyond childish.
