After three years, I've accumulated just under 40 pipes in my regular rotation. Since that time, I've gone thru several attempts to store them in an area that suited my use and my wife's aesthetics. In this case, form definitely trumps function.
I've kept most of my collection in our dining room, which was never popular solution, despite the convenience. I started out with a vintage smoking stand we've owned for 20 years, but quickly outgrew the top of that small piece. I've added various racks and even a 16 pipe Sherlock Holmes case. I collect Syroco or other "Westie/Scottie" individual stands and those helped. But the collection was getting spread out, including partially in our finished area of the basement (less convenient).

Another problem was a cat taht we acquired last year, who has since learned to jump on things, like that stand above. I had moved all the racks and stands to higher ground on top of our dining room china cabinet, but not a great solution.
Today, I found what should get me thru the next several years. I have been searching for a curved, vintage (1930's or so) curved glass cabinet and we found one today. It's not perfect, but the four shelves hold all of my pipes and tobacco jars on the bottom shelf. It's in our little used dining room, so the wife is happy. Happy wife, happy life, eh? I have two, "Fairfax" brand 6 pipe racks and added a 3rd this morning via Ebay. They will fit all the way across on shelf and I'll be looking for more as they pop up.
I have the Sherlock Holmes case on a few pipe forum classified, give me a shout if it interest you. I'll also have it in the car for the Richmond show.

Great system, though I hope I'll never need a cabinet that size for this hobby alone! Maybe a dual-purpose "man cabinet."

Just to get folks thinking about potential cabinets, here are two I considered:
This one was $200 and it needed some work. It might have been a little too small but it was made of cherry, which matches more of our furniture.

I wiffed on this one, it was $165 an would have been perfect. Nice and dark, good for vulcanite stems. I made an offer of $125, which was declined. It needed some help inside, new shelves needed to be constructed (fairly simple). I decided to pay the full price a few days later and someone was at the shop buying it. You snooze, you lose!

Thanks Sam, it was a point of contention. I had that Sherlock Holmes cabinet and thought I would mount it in our finished basement (insulated, drywalled/ceiling) But, I found down there the humidity was too varied and my pipe stems would become loose. I didn't think that was a good long-term storage solution. I did have them scattered about the dining room and sometimes you could smell them. My wife was pretty patient to that point and my neighbors thought I was pretty strange (ok, they always thought that..).
Russ O. grabbed my Sherlock Holmes case and I'll be handing to him in person at the Richmond show, I'm pleased it went to someone I know (vs. a stranger on Ebay)

That is a really nice cabinet Al - and I like the way you displayed them inside.
I really like the one you ended up with. The pipes deserve to be displayed. My wife would NEVER allow my pipes to be in the dining room :?
+1
Right now my pipes are on a book shelf, in a hallway. The good part is that they are fairly out of sight (which makes my wife happy), but within easy reach.

Very nice case. Right now mine are sitting in a couple stands on my poker table.

Very nice, I have one like the Cherry Cabinet.

Also have the small pipe cabinets with glass doors.

Older bookcases with glass doors are nice, but pricey.

Curio Cabinets work well also.

Al,

That is a beautiful bow-front - my wife has wanted one for years. That is a great solution for a pipe case. I have a small 1930's cabinet in the basement that is going to be my winter project. That way I can give Den back her curio cabinet for the inkwell collection.
As you know, we also have a westie and just recently Den picked up a Wade terrier pipe rest. I haven't got it yet, but if someone had told me 5 years ago that I'd be excited about a piece of Wade china I'd have thought they were crazy. While I like pipe racks, the individual pipe stands are great for special pipes. Enjoyed seeing your collection.
