Something about the idea of Latakia has been turning me off lately, but I'm glad I chose to try Nightcap tonight. Starts off smoky, a little savory. My experiences with Latakia blends have been somewhat predictable so far, full of incense and floral notes. This is a delightful change.
The flavor remained monotone for a short while, but it has developed a light spice and nuttiness that accentuates the smokiness quite well. I can see this blend becoming a favorite quite quickly.
I want to note: whenever I do these reviews, I keep a tall glass of cold water on the table and refresh my palate a little every now and again. Just took my first sip of watercsince lighting up, and upon returning to the smoke I am greeted by a slightly stronger sweetness and a bit of woody uncurrent. Result of the drink, I wonder?
Moving on I find that the presence of Latakia is becoming less obvious, transforming into a light blanket while the rest of the blend is becoming more complex. I'm getting a light fruity flavor that plays a bit like Perique and the internet tells me there might be some of that precious Looseeanna leaf in the blend. The nuttiness mentioned earlier had an ebb and flow that I like, leaves each puff a little different but not inconsistent. This smoke has become a real treat!
Wasn't expecting much after being bored by E.M.P., which I didn't review, but this was a terrific smoke and I can't wait to get some more in the pipe! (After I try everything else in my cellar...)

Nightcap is good stuff, and there is a definite Perique twang in it. Mix a little of it with a good plain burley, and you get a great "American English" as a special bonus.

Nightcap is one of my favorites - if I want a lat blend this is my go to. I never get tired of this one.

Glad you found it. I enjoy nightcap quite a bit also. Not a lat bomb, but the latakia is definitely a noticeable major player

Nightcap is one of the great Dunhill blends, a universal favorite. Some don't like it, but not many. I think it's one of three Dunhill blends that comes in bulk. A classic.

I've smoked many English blends including those by Dunhill. After Nightcap the rest paled by comparison and now it's the only English blend I smoke.

This was three years ago but I sealed it into a jar. Thought nightcap was just a general English blend. I wanted to like it, and I did but there are better, cheaper blulk variatties that are good too. but I think the hype three years ago was too much.

I love nightcap, I find it to be a much higher quality english then most of the blends I've smoked. I also love EMP. Apparantly the murray's version is the one that will knock you on your ass.

Great review! There's a reason this blend has been around so long. I love it- not every day, but when I get that itch, nothing else satisfies like Nightcap........... wonderful stuff. I have smoked the Murray's too, and while it is stronger, I like the new stuff better. The Old nightcap was kinda one dimensional, whereas to me, the new has more nuances and surprises......... :puffy:

Very nice review, Triple H.
Nightcap became my daily smoke about three years ago and, while I do enjoy several other favorite Lat forward blends from time to time, those occurrences are becoming less frequent. That said, I hope to always have some Star of the East, Gaslight, Old Ironsides, 10 to Midnight, Montford Point Marines and Low Country Black on the shelf. Our Nightcap has layers of nuanced pleasure and even when purchased in bulk remains a high quality tobacco with fewer sticks, burrs and brambles than many other bulk buys.
I've never smoked the Murray variant and that's okay. Why pine for something that no longer exists and has become difficult to find?
Well done and well written, pal.
