Hello, All.
I've created a pipe tamper of my own design that opens and closes with one hand operation. I did this because I was getting irritated will soot getting on anything my previous tampers touched. Pockets mostly. I am aware that there are tampers with caps, but I haven't seen anything that can be capped and uncapped easily with one hand. It also has a built in pick. I have been thinking for a while now about possibly selling the design or producing them myself, but need a gauge of whether there is any interest in the community. So tell me. Is this something that you can see being of use to you? I have been using it for a while now and think it very useful. I tamp a lot and find being able to pull it out of my pocket and use it quickly with one hand while keeping my pocket clean is very convenient.
I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks,
Eloc

3D printed?

What's the purpose of the "wings"? I'm trying to figure out the multi-tool utility if there is some?

The material and rubber band probably nonstarters, it doesn't really fold into anything "noteworthy" - just my impressions. Tampers seem to by and large be pretty simple but range from a "nail" to mini-sculptures.

Applaud the ingenuity and all IMO, millions may disagree!

Love it, nice design. I do use the scoop on my czeck tool regularly. Does one of your wings serve as such?

I should have explained. The wings close around the end of the tamper to keep the soot that collects there from transferring to your pocket. That is my gripe with a simple tamper, that they dirty my pockets and fingers.

No. The wings are only to cover the tamper end. I use the pick to get the dottle out. A scoop would be nice, but I couldn't fit one in this design.

Ah! I'm one of those that has several but rarely use the "real tampers" - I'm usually sitting about somewhere at my house and 90% of the time there I use a golf tee. The one in my Jeep is one of those tamper with folding stuff designs and it rarely sees a pocket, if I'm on a walk I can wipe it on my jeans if necessary, so I'm probably not representative of your target buyer. I'm sure dedicated "tamperers" will pop in!

What inspired the design?
After a few times walking and smoking and getting sooty pockets I started thinking of a solution. I like streamlined things, so I didn't want to have to bring a rag to wipe off the tamper end. I also sometimes drive and smoke, so I wanted it to be one hand operation to make driving and tamping easier. I went through a couple of versions that didn't work so well before settling on this one.

Interesting design though I don't use tampers or picks. It may benefit from being made of wood or metal though.
You say you don't use a tamper. Do you mean you don't tamp, or that you use your finger?
I agree it would be great in metal. I don't have the resources to make it in metal however.
