A New Method Of Consuming Tobacco?

I was just reading a BBC News article about vape shops where one vape shop entrepreneur bemoaning the decline in the industry was interviewed and it stated...
"He's also keeping an eye on the big tobacco companies, who are launching products that heat tobacco, rather than burn it, which they claim is less damaging to health."
What are these 'products' and how on earth do they work?

Thanks Steve, I appreciate what you're saying but I was of the impression that this new 'device' was actually using real tobacco as opposed to chemical infused liquids so was therefore not a vaping device.
But of course I could be mistaken.

Technically that's how a hookah works.. tobacco is heated to the point of vaporizing without actually burning.
Pretty old technology.
