The vendor who sold me this Dublin a few years ago labelled it as an Orlik.

On closer examination “Orlik” does not appear anywhere on the shank nor stem.
The stem bears a solid brass dot rather than the Orlik “O”

One side of the shank is stamped “Straight” above “Grain”
The reverse side has “London England” in one line above “089”

I’ve looked at Orlik and Comoy shape charts as well as Pipephil and came up with a zero

Any ideas ?

I’m certainly no Britwood Pro, but, how many makers started off using a Zero in front of numbers like this, as 089?

I just noticed online that Civic and Loewe used a Zero in their numbering, and pipes listed as 089.

I saw this on 089 on SPC.

For whatever this pic is worth, it shows this Civic 089, if it is.

Could it be a Loewe or Civic that didn’t have the name stamped on, a mistake or second? 🤔

On the Pipedia for Loewe, towards the bottom it shows pictured with several pipes, a 089 at the top.

Scroll down to this section, ‘Loewe pipes 1968-1969 (Civic era), courtesy Yuriy Novikov’, and just below it, you’ll see the 089 pipe.

Good sleuthing 👏 👏

That Civic Shape 089 Dublin looks similar to mine.
What threw me was the brass dot inlaid stem and lack of brand name.

Could be following on from the Comoy tradition of not stamping their “rejects” with the brand - just “Straight Grain” or “Selected Straight Grain”

This, then, is most likely a Cadogan era pipe - a “reject”
Pipedia gives examples of Loewe and Civic pipes of the same shape and shape numbers

All I was going off is this Zero numbering, which I’ve not seen before, and not sure if it does mean something here. hmm 🤔

I haven’t seen that inlay before.

I wasn’t sure if this was a Civic/Loewe reject/second.

So my first question, has any other company started numbering with a Zero?

I was put off by that brass inlay
A few brands use brass “dots” eg Savinelli and Brigham
I assume it is a “reject” because of the lack of a brand

Comoy had a policy of not putting their name or logo on their “rejects”
The Selected Grain Comoy that I posted on WAYS yesterday was one such. I could not find any fills apart from a very few minute pits.
And its grain is superior to the (only) Blue Riband I own.

What about other makers using a Zero as the first number? 🤔

Looks like a number of my catalogs are still in moving boxes, including my Oppenheimer, Loewe, and Civic catalogs. Ugh. Going to be a while before I open any of them. I'm sick of moving boxes and don't want to spend any time going through the remaining ones. Maybe next spring. But it sounds like Oz has found a couple of likely sources.
