A Hans Hartmann Lovat

Hans Hartmann (from Pipedia) made pipes from the 1950s until 1970.
And early on sold them through Pibe Dan.
As such he was a contemporary of Sixten Ivarsson, Gert Holbek, IB Loren, Sven Knudsen amongst others. Although he didn’t have the same high profile.

A classic short Lovat.
Just under 13cm. Which is my preferred length.
What I love about this pipe is the well crafted tapered shank and stem (shown in the overhead shot).
And it is a sitter

Such attention to detail makes him stand out as a superb craftsman, in my book

Nice pipe, although maybe a little short for such a big bowl? IMO. Or maybe just the usual somewhat fisheyed camera?
I also love sitters. Such as Stanwell 17 and several older English billard/lovat designs.
I frequented Pibe Dan in the beg/mid 80s, when I was a student in Copenhagen. Bought (at least) one of their own more traditionally shaped pipes but never gave a thought to the name of the carver. As ignorant as I was at that time. And I stupidly tossed that favorite pipe, when the stem needed replacement....

I prefer the shorter Lovats as the are easier to clench than the longer more elegant looking versions

That has beautiful straight grain

Stanwell is my favourite non-English/British factory brand

The ones made pre-mid 1970’s (before they introduced myriad lines and seconds) often boasted beautiful grain.
And there were quite a few featherweight specimens, although they were not stamped as such.


A late 60’s-early70’s Stanwell.
With the original horribly oxidised stem (internally) and the new (The Danish Pipe Shop) acrylic stem.
I had it re-stemmed as I love the shape and because It is a true featherweight.

It's a good shape, more or less a tall billiard bowl with a short saddle stem. I have a good Johs version, fairly short with a good deep chamber.
