A question sure to knock some of you out of your L-Z-Boy in its betrayal of my ignorance given my experience of pipe smoking for 4 years. But in all that time I have smoked half-bend and mostly straight pipes because I never had any luck with a full bend pipe save for my 221 Peterson. I've come to enjoy the 221 and am curious about exploring larger full bend pipes. What would you recommend for a large full bend pipe? Are there any full bend billiards? Would the #5 Calabash by Peterson constitute a full bend pipe?

Savinelli's 614 is a good full bent without going full on Oom Paul.

I've debated one of those myself. If I can get cured of the 904 bug, I may grab one.

I'm strongly considering the #5 bent black Peterson Dublin. The price seems very reasonable and seems to have a good bend and large chamber. What do you think, ladies and gents?

That's the one. I may have been impulsive, but I haven't bought a pipe for awhile, it's been a rotten month, and I felt I deserved to get another pipe. And this one started to grow on me that I went ahead and ordered it...

whilst I like the shape I have read that they can get hot about 1/2 way through the bowl due to very little wall thickness at that point,i found this to be the case with my 305 .I no longer have it.

as they say your experiences may differ

Full bent pipes get a bad reputation for smoking wet. I like them because they hang from the jaw effortlessly, though the Oom Paul's are the definition of a true nose warmer. One can get smoke through the bit or up the noise equally well. I have 5 of them. My Peterson XL 315 makes a teaspoon of water each time I smoke it, that overflows the reservoir so that one smokes wet too.

Thanks, Paul. That would explain the low price tag. Dang. Really like the stout shape on it, too.

Well, I've other pipes that get a bit hot, so I've learned to ignore and live with it. I've already ordered the pipe and can return it if it doesn't pass inspection. But it's a Peterson, and despite some problems over the years I still go to them first for a given new pipe.

I never even considered an Oom-Paul ... until my wife gave me one for Christmas, a Sav Hercules with the series' standard XL bowl. This is not a huge pipe, and not heavy, and being full bent, extra easy on the teeth and jaw. It's a great pipe, a great smoker, and the Oom-Paul shape is like an afterthought to what a great pipe it is.
Another major favorite is a Ferndown full-bent billiard, not to be beat, my first estate, and a gift from a Forum's member.
And a third is a Danish made Bari, given to me years ago by my late wife's aunt, just a great, durable, traditional big-bowled pipe without a lot of weight to go with it.
My first pipe was a Tinder Box St. Ives, a full bent pot with a vertical saddle stem, probably made for TB by Chacom. I haven't seen others like it for sale anywhere, great pipe.
And two full-bent Peterson B11 brandies, a Shannon and a Killarney ebony, both fishtail bits, sitters, with zero quality control problems. Full bent are A-OK.

Peterson has a number of full bend pipes which attract me. Am more into 3/4 bent up as preferred bend. The XL 17 would be a larger full bend. Have it in the Kinsale line and it doesn't smoke particularly wet for me. I don't seem to notice much difference in degree of wetness between bent and straight pipes in my collection.
