What's with my recent love for large pipes? Because of the fizziks. They're a de facto reverse calabash with the dead air chamber filled with unburned tobacco. Meaning the next puff gets to marinate in a matrix of unburned tobacco AND cool down a bit before being snorfed. The flavor enhancement is eye opening.
So. Anyway. Apparently (unarguably, really), some collection's 1920's Dunhill LC sneaked off and did the deed with the Former stacked doggie shown in the photo (how pipes know where each other are located, or how they travel, I have no idea), and the following resulted.
The recurve shank and size gene was is all LC. (The offspring isn't a giant, but definitely a handful---halfway between a regular pipe and a true giant. Chamber size .92" x 2.55" The Lovat in the size comparison shot is a Group 4 shape 40).
The bowl design, finish, and blade-style stem came from the Former.
The wabi-sabi patch of burl on the rim is a recessive trait, I figure. A reminder that some pipe up the line (great grandma, maybe?) was a non-conformist smartass.
Boy howdy, do I love this pipe. Comfortable in hand, comfortable to clench (the stem is so good it nullifies the weight), and tobacco has never tasted better (I wish I'd discovered the big chamber thing years ago).
