The U.S. Navy has released the first photo of damage sustained in a collision between USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) and Panamanian-flagged M/V Besiktas-M.

America has ten more of those in commision and three more building, but each one takes about ten years to build and commision and the Navy gets upset when one gets in a little fender bender.

The Harry is 1,100 feet long and weighs 100,000 tons and runs 30+ knots and some third world Panamanian freighter was able to get a lick in.

The Navy won’t blame Panama, no they won’t.

The bulk of visible damage occurred on the starboard side aft of elevator 3, damaging the underside of a sponson with a .50 caliber machine gun. The aircraft elevator adjacent to the damaged portion appears undamaged. According to the U.S. Navy, the incident did not cause any flooding or injuries onboard the Truman.

In the event a small boat wanted to try and pull a USS Cole bombing type suicide on Truman, that fifty was part of the last line of defense.

The merchant vessel grossed 53,000 tons and was as big as a French, Russian or Chinese aircraft carrier. It was huge, although the Truman is twice as huge,

The only thing that makes any sense is the freighter leaving the Suez Canal as the Truman approached.


Both ships surely saw one another.


Aircraft carriers use the open ocean as their first defense. You can’t hurt what you can’t find.

And they usually have large screens of other ships protecting them.


But in narrow waters the Truman is a big, fat target.

If it had been a true bow to bow head on collision, this accident could hace blossomed into sheer catastrophe.
