About thirty five years ago I discovered 4 hole stinger Kaywoodies, then about twenty years ago Pipes by Lee, and a couple or three years ago Bob and Helen Marx made Marksmans, and this year Bertram’s, made of aged, oil cured, unstained, unvarnished, and unpainted Pre Algerian War of Independence briar by crippled soldiers, in the shadow of the Capitol dome in the District of Columbia, USA.

And for all those years the average price I’ve paid for a used pipe is about $25.

This one may be sour, but I think I can clean this up, and for $25 plus $7.50 shipping and taxes to the dag blasted gubbermint, I ought to have a geniune Bertram that was the finest American production pipe ever made, bar none.

A beginner does not have to smoke overpriced British and Italian and Danish pipes.

For $25 you can sometimes buy the equal of the best pipe ever made at any price anywhere in the world.

It should be here this week, and I’ll clean it and show it off.

Bertram pipes have wonderful classical shaping and a pretty solid reputation. They often fetch a pretty penny online. I hope it’s a solid smoker for you.

During the Golden Age of pipes from 1919 to 1950 Bertram had machine shaped pipes from $1.50 to $10 and hand made straight grains from $10 to $25.

This is not the lowest grade, nor the highest. It’s supposed to turn oxblood.

That cake will just peel off in seconds, using a sharp pocket knife as a scraper. The rim looks good under the lava.

I like to see nice unchewed stems and buttons. The oxidation will scrub right off.

It’s not as dark as lots of Marxman pipes I’ve brought back.

Unless it’s musty or sour, if ought to be like new a few minutes after I get it.

Anybody with $32.50 to spare can smoke a genuine Bertram.

No grade or shape numbers on this one.

Let’s pretend it was made in 1951, by crippled soldiers out of ancient, oil cured, aged, unvarnished, unstained, and unpainted Algerian briar at Bertram’s in the shadow of the Capitol dome at Washington DC.

Prove it wasn’t.

Sing one, Merle.

Interesting, no grade number. When I lived in MD, I used to find well used examples at junk/antique shops, they must have been pretty prevalent here back in the day.
Here's 920 14th Street in DC today. We're the only ones that remember what it once was.

I remember going to some pretty seedy strip clubs on 14th Street in the early 80's. It was right around the corner from the DC convention center. I wasn't prone to visiting those kind of establishments, so it felt pretty dirty. We walked in one, and a girl walked by in a see through blouse. I thought, "this isn't so bad". Then my friend pointed out she wasn't wearing any pants. "No Cover". We had one, $20 beer and left.

And a pretty cool review of the pipe company.

I stayed at college for the summer semester in 1977 but the day after my finals my mother and I went to Stockton where she traded in her 1973 Chevy Caprice for a brand new 1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme 350 Rocket Four Barrel and I broke in that car driving towards Nashville.

We visited Washington DC.

If I’d only known about Bertram’s I’d have bought a pipe there.
