Greetings

I have a couple of pipes that accept 9mm filters. I have two types of filters. There are the charcoal filled 9mm filters. But I was given a bag full of what looks like half length (compared to the charcoal filters) fiber filters. Similar to what a cigarette filter looks like on a standard cigar.

  1. what is your thoughts on filters on pipes?
  2. What do you think about the 9mm filters? Dr. Grabow thinner paper filters? Etc.
  3. Have you ever used these shorter “foam” type filters? Thoughts?

thank you

I really enjoy my filter pipes. Sometimes I smoke them with filters, more often without. When I smoke without I sometimes use adapters and other times don't. Some of my pipes that I enjoy smoking the most are made to accept filters. On the other hand I also enjoy and value my pipes that don't accept filters. Smoking with a filter seems to help a little when smoking in wind and can sort of even out the blends that tend to smoke harsher.

As far as 9mm charcoal type filters go I prefer the ones made by Stanwell.

Haven't tried them. I think I'd be concerned about waste production. Waste is actually a concern of mine with any filters but those Stanwell ones seem to have a type of ceramic on the ends rather than plastic.

The filter/no filter debate has gone on for ages. Personally, I don't find any difference in a filter vs. Non filter.

The Brigham filters are probably the exception for me. They are excellent in cutting out moisture.

I use balsa to help moisture control. It gives me a larger margin of error for wet tobacco, bad technique, or finicky weather conditions.

Savinelli 9mm balsa filters are fine.

Agree with all of this. If not for the Balsa filters covering my mistakes in the beginning I probably would not have stuck with smoking a pipe.

1- I do not like filters at all. They seem to ruin the draw for me and I hate that I need to keep a stock of them on hand. I got rid of my filtered pipes because of this.
2- if I had to have a filtered pipe, it would be one of the paper filter type because I can just roll up some paper and stick it in there. Still not ideal IMO.
3- Aren't the foam ones for cigarettes? I haven't seen a foam filter in a pipe or advertised for pipes.

I do believe you can get an adapter for some filtered pipes though to convert them from 9mm to standard diameter.
