For those that enjoy a 9mm filter there's an issue I'd like to present for consideration. I've noticed that in some of my pipes the filter fits well and makes a nice seal whereas others fit loose and allow a fair amount of smoke to pass unfiltered. I know this due to the very easy draw and flavor and ensuing tongue bite with quicker cadence.

Its my understanding that the well fitting ones have a newer style filterchamber with a conical or countersunk end toward the mouthpiece. And I've attempted to solve the ill fitting filter issue by wrapping ussually a wide filter tip paper around the filter to take up the space.

I wondered if anyone elae finds this to be an issue and if there are any other solutions other than having a new stem made.

Pipe filters aren't like cigarette filters to absorb nastiness out of the smoke, they're just moisture traps. I've personally never really gotten a tongue burn from smoking a pipe but my understanding is that the filters help with that. Have you tried Dr. Pearl filters for a better fit?

Yes actually the Vauen Aktivkohle (dr.pearl jr) are my filters of choice and fyi they absorb much more than moisture. They are the company that developed them based on charcoal filters used in gas masks by the Germans in WWI and absorb all sorts of toxic substances. Aside from helping with tongue bite and moisture they also allow the true flavor of the tobacco come through (imho) sans much of the throat and gum ravaging substances folks like me are sensitive to.

Would be great if someone could shed some light on my aforemtioned and seconded issue..

If you are referring to the countersink in the tenon, that's there to reduce turbulence in the draw and moisture buildup.

Er, no. The first puffs, maybe; but once they get moist all you get is a nasty plasticky taste. I stopped using them for that reason and just use the adapter.

I don't even use adapters anymore. I just adjust the pack to tighten the open draw.
