I don't know which of the Pete Geeks have one of each of these pipes so I thought I’d post here and ask.

I know the pipe lengths are different from comparing examples of each from SP. I believe that’s due to the stem lengths.

But are there other differences? Are the stummels shaped a little differently? Or are the stems shaped differently apart from the length?

Bonus question: Could I get Peterson to fit a regular BC or space saver BC stem onto my 9S?

I have an XL90 and I love the heft of the bowl and thick shank.

I wish Peterson had devoted more thought and time to the stem design.
The taper from a thick shaft to a smallish P-lip (a rather abrupt transition) and the bend looks "wrong" to my eyes. It just does not "flow"
Rather like a lass with thunder thighs and skinny calves and ankles. 😆

Nothing to do with smoke ability.
Just the aesthetics.

I'm sure @georged can come up with a much more pleasing looking stem without too much trouble.

Yeah I completely agree. The 9BC addresses some of that but it still has the really narrow portion by the bend.

Are the top and bottom customs by you? The top one with slightly shorter stem that’s tapered with a p-lip is what I’m hoping for.

Also, how does one cut a p-lip from rod?

The top one is from rod stock. the middle one is the original, and the long one on the bottom is an antique Chesterfield that was modified to fit Pete's diameter and taper rate (the two companies had proprietary sizes that were different).

Making a P-lip from rod is possible, but a gold plated PITA. Not recommended. (All P-lips are molded for a reason. lol )

My experiences with 9BCs, the Canadian version, Shape 56 and XL90's vary greatly in size and dimensions.
GENERALLY, XL90's are larger in all dimensions. 9BC are all over the map. I prize m 9BC Kapruff, it's the smallest example of the shape that I've encountered. I'll try to do some side-by-sides with my XL90 Supreme and Kapruff 9BC

2020 POY - 60 grams
56 (Canadian 9BC) - 58 Grams
XL90 - 79 grams
56 (Canadian 9BC) - 68 grams
9BC- 65 grams
XL90 (1993) - 73 grams
XL90 Supreme (1993)- 74 grams
9BC Kapruff - 67 grams (the smallest dimension 9BC I've seen)
9BC Premiere Selection - 70 grams (the largest I've seen)

Some sold pix. I typically don't take a ruler picture unless the pipe is being sold.

Ah yeah that makes sense that they’re molded. I was thinking that it would be pretty difficult since I figure you’d have to cut the button facing somewhat down so that when you straighten it out you get the draft hole pointing up.

If I acquired a p-lip blank with the metal tenon extension, could it be shortened and fitted on the 9s? I think your first stem is about the right length (maybe I would do it just slightly shorter, if possible).

Thank you for the pics and measurements! In your experience, is the 9BC generally chubbier than the XL90? I guess what I mean by chubbier is that it has a thinker shank relative the to bowl width and/or shorter length relative to the height.

Also, are bent pipe normally measured like this? I always assumed the measurements on SP were with the top of the bowl being parallel to the ground.

You can get Deluxe chimneys from Smoking pipes and fit them molded P-Lip saddle bits.

Bit no 601

That 601 is a good option for a saddle stem but what I’d like to do is get a short tapered stem. I don't know if anyone but Peterson makes those.

FWIW turning a Pete style condenser (chimney) from aluminum rod stock is also pretty easy. I've made em before for larger WDC Wellingtons and KBB Chesterfields and fitted them to the original stem.
Before trying to turn my own condenser I need to first figure out how to drill threads in the tenon to accept said condenser. How does one do that?

Once I figure that out I figure I would reuse the condenser on the 9s for now.
