OMG, as the young folk say.
Based on recommendations and a generally cool name, I ordered some Cornell & Diehl Pirate Kake. Oh, wow. This is the best thing I've smoked in my (admittedly short) experience.
The tin note was accurately described by my six-year-old as "stinky." No kidding. It, like many Latakia blends, smells like my imagined result of using stale moose urine to extinguish a dung fire. How can something that smells like that taste so good?
After opening the tin, I worried that the kakes were too dry. There was no perceptible moisture at all, but I crumbled some up anyway.
The crumbling was not what I expected. It broke apart very easily, though I expected some resistance. I had even gotten a knife ready, assuming I'd need to cut it into chunks. Nope. it just fell apart in my hand. Is this normal?
Still felt too dry. Not that I know what too dry feels like, but it felt drier than I thought it should feel.
What the heck, I lit it anyway. I packed it kind of loose into my three dollar and ninety-nine cent MM Ozark Cherry. (I'm not a rich man, but I am willing to pay for quality!) Lit up, and was immediately struck by how smooth and cool it was. I meant to do a charring light, let it go out, then re-light, but I just kept on smoking.
The "stinky" smell became an earthy, rich flavor that I don't really have the vocabulary to describe, except to say, yum!
I didn't get any of the chemical-type burn that I was getting with some blends, particularly perique blends, but I did find myself puffing faster and faster until it started to burn really hot. OK. Cool burning but not completely idiot-proof. I let that go out, waited till it cooled completely, then finished the bowl. Smoked slowly it does seem to be almost completely bite free.
I waited until this morning to smoke another bowl, worried that my first experience might have been a fluke, but it was not. This morning's smoke was, if anything, more successful than last night's.
I leave work in three hours, then it's home to smoke some more. Dang, that's good (if stinky) stuff!

If you like Pirate Kake you should try C&D's da Vinci same high Latakia content but loose not a cake or flake.

That, "stinky", is often described as a campfire smell, but isn't it great? One of my favorites as well!

Yes on the YUM! PK is the first tobacco that reminded me of what I used to smoke ages ago (had a 40 year layoff)- Burlington Arcade, which no one seems to know enough to guess its composition. (It's been out of production for over 30 years.)
I've been smoking too-moist tobacco, and the PK seemed just right to me. It was rich and smooth. I've put dung out of my mind, maybe why I didn't get any hint of that.
Rob, are you in the Tobacco Crawl?

I tried some straight bulk Latakia a few months ago and it's really not that bad. It is one dimensional though, definitely better with Orientals and Virginias mixed in.

Latakia cured over camel dung.
With moose urine to keep it smokey!
Seriously, though, I really love the taste, but I can easily see how many, many people object to the smell. I can see me learning to like the smell, through association with the taste, but I can't see how anyone could honestly call the smell "good."
jfox, I'll try some da Vinci when I get a chance. I actually ordered some other "Lat-forward" blends in this last order, but Pirate Kake is the only one I've tried so far.
jpmswjr, what is a Tobacco Crawl?
Thanks and, as usual, I welcome any and all recommendations!

If you want some serious Latakia, you should try Dan Tobacco Old Ironside. It is well known to have some of the highest proportion of Latakia than any of the blends out there.

I am glad you enjoy Pirate Kake. I always have some on hand. And I am a very blessed man. My non-smoker wife always asks what I am smoking when I light it up. Of course I ask, "Why?" before answering and her response is always, I like it. As I said...blessed.

Pirate cake is delicious as is SOTE which claims to be 50% Latakia. If you love Latakia you owe yourself a treat and get onto these blends.

....moose urine to put out a dung fire....

That is absolutely the best description of Latakia scent that I have ever heard....priceless!
On a more serious note I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. I will be trying it for the first time soon for the June Tobacco Crawl and I'm really looking forward to sampling it. Many others on the forum speak highly of it as well. I tried Star of the East for the first time tonight and must say that it was excellent! I am really starting to enjoy the Latakia blends as I expand my tobacco menu. :puffy:

Pirate Kake is very delicious! I would also recommend C&D's Bow Legged Bear, to me, it tastes just like PK but just a tad sweeter.

Robk, or anyone else here, as Jkrug mentioned, we'll be smoking Pirate Kake during next weeks tobacco crawl. It would awesome if you dropped by and shared your reviews and comments. It is perfectly ok to parachute in to discuss a single blend.

Robwoodall:
I'm a Lat whore and am glad your glad your first experience with the campfire weed was a success.
The suggestions you've received are solid: I cellar Star of the East, Old Ironsides, Lancers Slices, Dunhill Nightcap plus P&C's Larry's Blend and tasty 10 to Midnight.
I'm also very fond of a couple of well below the radar blends: C&D's Montford Point Marine, Captain Earle's Stimulus Package and the superb Low Country Black, (the latter two both made under the watchful eye of C&D.)
So welcome to the other side, pard. VAs and VaPers will always be popular with Communists, tree hugging Green Party Socialists, Transgendered, those threatening to transgender, Canadians, EMOs, Fellini fans and Prius owners. (These people make up the vast majority of the world, Rob.) I'm glad you've chosen to join the select few who are preparing to immigrate to, and eventually take over, the Eastern Republic of Uruguay.

Now listen here you jack-boot wearing, Limbaugh lovin', Tornado Alley living, wheat field stompin' sum'gun!
Just cause I love me some VaPers and live in Canada by NO MEANS indicates that I own a Prius. The rest? Well played.
PS - I also love Larry's Blend and a fair few Balkans... Can we still hang?
