I am considering a Savinelli for the rack. A 614 bent billiard.
It'll probably be a Punto Oro sandblast.
I don't use filters, so with that in mind, is there any difference between the 6mm and 9mm drills?
Any reason to choose one over the other?

P.S. In danish, a flyfucker is someone who focuses on insignificant details, loosing the bigger picture.

Don't know why that came to mind.

I have several Savinelli pipes, and all of them are 6mm. Peterson has a filter line, and it’s 9mm. I can’t think of any reason for the size difference except for the cost and variety of filters, which is negligible. The inside diameter of the available adapters are similar.

I have Savinelli pipes in 6mm and 9mm. I like them both, but am not sure if I have really experienced much difference between them. in theory, the 9mm should absorb a bit more noiature due to the greater surface area of the balsa, if using that type of filter. The 6mm balsa filters are less expensive though and I also use them in my MM cobs.

Mine are all 6mm and smoke perfectly fine with or without the filter. Don’t have any 9mm pipes because my life is complicated enough without adding another variable but people in Europe seem to like them from what I’ve seen. Might be an availability thing? Not sure, but I rarely encounter them in the US.

The main draft hole is 3mm with an appropriately sized chamber (either 6mm or 9mm) at the tenon to accommodate the filter. You can smoke without the filter and the open space would function as a quasi/mini reverse calabash chamber, moreso for the 9mm size. Alternatively, inserts are available for both size filter chambers to reduce the opening to the standard 3mm size.

Yeah, I was gonna mention about the impromptu reverse-calabash effect on 9mm pipes. I burnt the hell out of my mouth when I tried to smoke mine without filter or adapter, though. But if you possess the right technique, it might even make your smokes cooler.
