Very cool to see a four pipe cased set from this period, and one that was actually produced by Barling. These pipes were certainly very well enjoyed. I'll be curious to see if it sells at the price given. Condition is pretty good, not great, bowls are over reamed and out of round, and significantly worn. But it is the earliest 4 pipe set that I've yet seen. No indication of the condition of the chamber walls and possibly unsmokable. Many of these really early pieces are pretty fragile. As a collectible, it's a pretty neat item. I don't know that it's $6000 worth of neat, but that's just me.

$6k does seem pretty steep, but I guess it is one-of-a-kind. Interesting history theory on the recipient.
If it brings $6k, those two need to invest in some shoe polish...Sgt A. W. White would have been appalled.

I was stunnedly fascinated to read and watch all the info they included with this set! How fascinating it would be to nail down Sgt A.W. White and the circumstances surrounding the gifting of this set!

I was surprised by the asking price. I appreciate the value to collectors, but those shapes are really outstanding. If I were a pipemaker I would probably consider buying the pipes simply to figure out how to duplicate them.

THIS VIDEOCo-incidentally, I watched THIS VIDEO yesterday on a set just like that.
That is the set! The image in the video is much better lit than the still photo above.
Great bits of info; thanks Chris and 'broom.

After watching the video yesterday I was a little surprised at the price.

I was thinking they'd be asking around $8k!

If you go on ForcesofWar.com you can track down the soldier who was gifted these pipes. I have not performed the search for this Mr. white, but I've successfully searched for other soldiers I've had pipes from.

Somewhat off topic but believe it or not my paternal grandfather fought in the Boer War and I am 'only' 55! Thing is he didn't sire my father until in his 70's (1925) hence the huge time difference.
He was born in 1855 (Nottinghamshire, England) and was an old man at sign up, along with one of his sons. He was already in South Africa (tram driver, diamond miner, policeman, sewing machine salesman etc) so it made sense to him I suppose.
I still have his silver Queen's Boer War medal with campaign clasps with his name and number inscribed around the edge "Isaac Roland...Bicyclist" so I presume a forerunner of the modern day dispatch rider.
Just thought I'd mention it :puffy:
Oh, and I have his Boer War pipe, a huge behemoth of a thing, beautifully carved and in four parts!
Regards,
Jay.

Apologies for 'overtaking' this thread but pictures were asked for so here they are. Taken rather hurriedly they should at least give an idea of what I have.
First up Isaac's medal. I actually think it says "Cyclist" as opposed to "Bicyclist" as I originally stated..

...and now his pipe. What it is made of I haven't a clue but I'm pretty sure it isn't briar. The bowl is pretty cavernous and would hold a heck of a lot of baccy! It is what I believe to be called a 'wine pipe' as the bottom section is designed to hold wine which when one draws upon the pipe it is supposed to flavour the smoke as it passes through the wine.

Clearly very damaged, broken antlers and a broken leg plus missing the top part. The stem breaks down into two pieces and is threaded. I do have the two brass ferules tucked away somewhere. One day I would love to see this pipe fixed (no intention of using it) but know of no place that could undertake such a task.
So there we go, two of my grandfather's Boer War artifacts. If he was alive today he would be 162 years old!
Regards,
Jay.
