First a BIG thank you to Shaintiques for his generosity! This was a wonderful surprise and a real treat!
Now the disclaimer. The following is completely subjective. I didn't try multiple bowls in multiple pipes. Comparing the two seemed like a fun thing to try, and when would I ever have another opportunity? I had a limited supply for this experiment so this is an impression based on that limited sample. I used matching Barling pots as I find that Balkan blends do very well in a pot. I smoked a couple of bowls of each, going back and forth, to taste what seemed different.
Do they taste the same? No, of course not, but the profile is very similar. The 35 year old Sobranie presented a more delicate, less robust profile, but the overall balance was quite similar. The bloodline comes across in the White Knight. The years have muted the latakia in the Sobranie, but it has also blended the varietals so that one is presented with a unified flavor. In the White Knight, I can taste the separate components. The smoky latakia is more pronounced and the tea-like note of the yenidje is clearly present. I think that While Knight is certainly more successful than the new Balkan Sobranie, which I found pleasant but bland. Is White Knight a good representation of what '80's Balkan Sobranie was like back in the day? Possibly, but I can't say definitely. It is, however, pretty damned good.

I mostly smoked Sobranie in the early 70's and that version, as I remember it, had a more pronounced spice and floral component to the smoke than either of these.

Anyways, this is one old geezer's opinion based on a limited sampling and gradually diminishing cranial activity.

Thanks Sable - really useful. I have some old Balkan Sobranie coming from a friend and I was wondering what I would do (short of robbing him of the rest of his stash!) if I really liked it. I certainly find myself moving more and more towards balkans as I get older - if White Knight gets close then that is certainly merits investigation.

Thanks -I've got two tins of White Knight on hand - probably be opening one soon. I smoked a ton of Sobranie Original back in the early 70s. Will be fun to compare against my (very foggy) memory.

I'm smoking some old BS right now, of unknown vintage -- a gift from misterlowercase from an old tin he picked up. I've had the new BS revival and it's very similar, but lacks the same oomph. I'm fairly convinced it has something to do with the "sauce" they used in the original. There's something faintly St. Bruno-ish in here that I hadn't really noticed before. I suspect many of the old-time classics had a special sauce -- Three Nuns certainly did. Does anyone have any info on the flavorings used in the old Balkan Sobranie?
I'll have to try White Knight at some point -- the OP definitely has me intrigued.

I've never tried the original Sobranie. It was long gone from the market when I started pipe smoking and I never had the urge to pay the price for a vintage sample of it.
I love White Knight though! From my first taste of it in the ISPD sampler, I was hooked. Have 10 tins put away and will probably add more in the not too distant future.

Torina, which is made by Synjeco in Switzerland, is closer to the BS White that I smoked for all those years, starting in 1982. But WhiteKnight is closer to the earlier BS White version Russ smoked.

I went onto Synjeco's site to look at their offerings and came across this one that I had to share:
Product name: Elephant Dung

Type: English with Latakia
Comment: With this blend you not only have to like Latakia - you have to positively "crave" the taste, as this

blend contains 50%, while the remain 50% are heavily steamed Virginia!! We are sure, that this blend

will fulfill the desire of the most pretentious smokers.
Gotta love honesty like that.
No mention of Torina on the site, so I guess that it is no longer being produced?

sablebrush: try this link: http://www.synjeco.ch/pataall/taba/4061.php?i5s13s1 Their Schurch blends are in three catagories as you'll see if you click on the name.
If you decide to order from them, Onyx, and Tarek Robusto are exceptional English blends, too. Mogano's almost as good as they are. I wish I could afford to order from them, as I did for thirteen years. I never had a single problem with them. But shipping's just more than I can afford now.
Btw, check under "Swiss" for a list of blends. The Virginia #444 is a good burley/Va. And they sell some Orlik blends not available in most places. Wish I had tried the Burrus line.

Intersting. I've never tried the original Sobranie, but Russ had some White Knight last month at a PA meetup. I enjoyed it, it was just bright enough to give it some character. Now, to find some...

I never cared for the original BS back in the early 1980s - some people say Condor has changed and for some reason St Bruno is certainly different today from how I remember it. I guess time starts to play tricks with our mind as the years pass. The only thing I know is that BS seems to ghost any pipe it comes into contact with since when I had to sort out my Mother house the other year I found a couple of briars that just tasted of BS and I know I had not smoked them since the early 1980s as well!

I'm glad you enjoyed the BS Sablebrush. This gift was in response to 2 beautiful pipes he sent me back when my pipes were stolen. A Tinsky panel and a high grade Nording made by the man himself. I have actually gotten to smoke the 35 year BS, the new or current BS and White Knight. And can say that as Sable said they do not taste exactly the same but similar. I have also had the BS version with no Yenidje and find it to be the best. It is spicier and richer in my opinion. But I think perhaps harder to find even than what I sent Sablebrush.

Which version of BS had no Yenidje? For whatever reason I had thought that all versions had Yenidje.
I'm still convinced that the casings they used in the original version(s) are responsible for the mouth-smacking flavor BS had. The new BS from Germain is very similar in a lot of ways, but the flavor lacks the same "oomph."
