Hi folks, I thought I would post a few pics of this second apple I attempted. I tried to correct some of the mistakes I made on the first one. I think it turned out OK but still have a few things to work on. My line is better following the stem/shank of onto the stummel. I made a mess of my stamp the first time and had to take it down and re-stamp. A consequence of that is that my line isn't as flat as I would like it to be.

The ring material is black buffalo horn with white swirl and I'm disappointed in the contrast. Next time I'll use a lighter horn material. I think the dark horn would look better with a lighter acrylic stem. Anyway here it is.

Sigh. I think it is just about perfect. If mine turned out that good...well, let's just say the pipe maker that is never quite satisfied is the master of the briar.

Excellent job, looks as if it came from Peterson. You should be proud of your achievement.

Bet it looks great in daylight. In the first photo, it looks like the stem has gone bad at the junction, but the others show it to be a separate ring. Agree that a bit more contrast would be better.
Nice work!

Beautiful grain, precision drilling, commodious bowl, attractive stem, and a nice band. Most of us would grab that one off the rack in a flash. I think it's good you are "looking for more." This is a fine pipe in so many ways. But because it is, it calls out for a grace note or spin that launches it into the magic category. Anyone who can do such a beautiful pipe is verging on that anyway. It might even be that mere patina from some wear might do the trick. Or a different band. But it's a gorgeous pipe.

Hey Paul, You know, I think I would have to agree with you. Like Toby Keith sang in Jackie Don Tucker. "Follow the rules and you miss all the fun."
