While cruising the Pipe Studs site last Saturday I noticed Steve has a new RYO section. I rolled my own squares for a handfull of years before picking up the pipe so I checked it out. Lo and behold he had a couple 25-30 year old 6 oz. tubs of Bugler.
Steves words: "I recently received a large batch of early 1990’s Bugler in 6 oz ring pull tins that looked very puffy. All have puffy factory sealed heavy duty commercial grade plastic under the lid. Being the adventurous type when it comes to my pipe smoking, I decided to try a bowl in one of my smaller pipes as I figured the puffiness meant a lot of fermentation and ripening had gone on over the 25-30 years of this tobacco being tinned up. I was especially curious since I knew that Bugler was one of the few RYO cigarette tobaccos that employed Turkish Orientals along with blended Burley and Virginia. So, I popped the tin and was blasted with the most naturally sweet and ripe smell of fermented Orientals and Virginias that my nose had ever been graced to smell. My mouth immediately started to water and I could not get the still perfectly moist shag cut leaf into my pipe fast enough. At first puff, I was in pipe smoker’s Heaven! The sweet and ripe taste of the Turkish Oriental leaf was the main player but my palate was also swarmed with layers of the tart sweet taste of a Virginia/Burley combination that also offered strength. And while this shag cut blend burns very fast, it also burns very cool. The taste was absolutely full and delicious."
Now since I have lots of small chambered pipes and still enjoy rolling one up, this intrigued me. Who doesnt like a ripe Virginia with a touch of Turkish?
Sure enough.. pulled back the lid and there it was.. Sweet, fermenty, mouth watering. Ive already smoked two squares and a small bowl of it. Tastes about as good as it smells. Im going to enjoy this stuff for a while. For what Steve was charging its a helluva value.

Thanks for the review of that RYO Bugler, Brian. I've actually had several good reviewers from buyers who were, like you, as surprised as I was that the tobacco had ripened so beautifully and actually was a darned good, if fast burning, pipe tobacco.
A little side story; I am always in charge of selecting the tobacco for my local pipe club's annual Slow Smoking Contest. Our 20th Annual slow smoker was held in July and I chose Bugler as the competition blend. The club members thought I was nuts (well okay, they already thought that). Anyway, all the guys really enjoyed the tobacco but the winning time was way shorter than usual (just over 44-minutes), due to the quickness of the burn. A couple of the contestants got a little woozy, too, as Bugler does pack some nicotine punch. But, I actually got kudos for choosing Bugler. A few years ago I chose the old Murray's era Royal Yacht as the competition blend. Nobody died but there were 3 members who had to be taken to the local hospital emergency room. I didn't think that was any big deal because none of them had to stay in the ICU for more than a couple of days. I almost got kicked out of the club for that one. )-:

The difference between a bag of pipe tobacco and a bag of RYO tobacco is often the label.
