I'm probably missing something obvious or simple. Never noticed the 23 following the 16 date number.
What does it mean?

I think 16 is the shape number, and 23 is the year code. More likely an '83 than a '76. Is it a bent chimney shape?

It's a stamped Quaint. A very French looking quarter bent acorn-ish.

Similar to the 721 shape but with a shorter shank and tapered stem.

It was originally stamped in 1976, then accidentally carried into the time machine Dunhill kept in their back room (Alfred bought it from H. G. Wells), and was returned to the line for an update after the worker finished his joyride.
Duh.

So it was originally finished/stamped in '76, but didn't leave the factory til '83?
I guess it WAS an odd era at Dunhill.
That's tough as 1983 is my birth year but I was considering selling this one.

Yes bluegrassbrian, I think it was simply in stock for 7 years. Dunhill did carry quite a large stock of finished pipes at times and with the purchase of Charatan in Mansell Street and The Grosvenor Pipe Co (Ben Wade) in Georgiana Street, they had a lot on their plate in 1976 and onwards.
