I was told decades ago that Dunhill intentionally made batches of lightly blasted Shells from time to time that were intended for sale in Germany, where pipes with an "orange peel" hand feel were prized. I have no idea if that's true, but the guy who told me was considered an expert at the time. If so, this pipe might have been one of them.
Or, it could simply be a Sardinian bowl that ended up in the wrong box and received Shell stain. (There's an Occam's Razor corollary along the lines of, "When the choice is between a romantic explanation and human error, the latter is more likely," buried in that, isn't there?)
Oh well.
In any event, as unremarkable as this pipe is in cut and finish, it is one of the last I'll ever part with because: 1) it's my best smoking 120; 2) it was my first 120; and 3) it came to me through Barry Levin, a long-gone dear friend I deeply miss to this day.
