I began this hobby October 23, 2019 (I keep a spreadsheet of every bowl I smoke). I had no relationship with tobacco prior. Just something about a pipe that all of the sudden appealed to me. I convinced myself that if I smoked <2.5 bowls per week (filter, no inhaling) I am reducing the risks to an acceptable level. I live a healthy lifestyle other than this indulgence. 2.5/week would amount to 130 bowls per year. I just had my hundredth bowl yesterday, so about 53 weeks to get to #100. I was satisfied with less than 2 bowls per week.

I am still experimenting and learning what I like. My technique is pretty good, I’d say. I can see why people smoke several times per day. It can be very enjoyable. Thanks to all here for the lessons I have learned on this site!

Here’s to the next 100 bowls!

Cheers

Wow, you are methodical. Accountant? Lab scientist? I think moderation is good. I smoke about a bowl a day, with some days off, and some living large with three or four bowls every few weeks. The flavor's better smoking in moderation, for me.

Yeah, I’m a quant guy... finance and Predictive analytics background. The spreadsheet keeps me honest so I don’t over indulge. Also it let’s me track what pipe/baccy combinations work best for me. I figure if I’m going to partake in this, I should collect some data.

Cheers

I’m at about the same rate, although it’s about to drop off a cliff for the winter.

It’s been a fun process of discovery.

I am glad for you, but I think some people are really overthinking. I had 5 bowls yesterday, 2 bowls the day before and haven't smoked any bowls for a month up until a week or so ago. I also keep a spreadsheet for the cigars I smoke, but just because to make the future purchases easier. IMHO, the overthinking part of this hobby should be while standing in front of your pipes and tobacco and trying to decide what to smoke in what.

You definitely have more discipline than me. I tried tracking my ......look squirrel.

I’m glad you figured out a way to enjoy this “hobby”

I started nine years ago, after essentially not smoking anything in my then 48 years.
I think not smoking prior to the pipes really helped me shorten the curve because I didn’t have other smoking styles to overcome.

100? That's roughly a month of smokes for me. There are members here who will smoke 100 in a week. Congrats on your 100th, and your discipline to keep track! I have trouble remembering what I smoked earlier today.

If I smoke 3.5 bowls an hour every 4th day and divide that by 22, which is my mothers age when she had me, multiply the hours in a day that the sun shines every leap year by how many cats I've had, I should live to be 110.3 years..... unless I get hit by that bus coming my way at a high rate of speed........

I could never live that way. I admire anyone that has a brain that continuously has stats running through it. I can occasionally remember how old I am but that's about it for being a statistician for me.

Ha! Love it! It’s just how my brain works. Everything is a ratio, or growth rate, or average... etc.

At this rate, maybe in five more years you'll know exactly what tobaccos you like. puffy
You are way more disciplined than me. I'm not even sure why one would track this sort of stuff, but it's very interesting that some folks do. Do you do this with everything, like foods, drinks, baths, sleep schedules? Just curious if this is just for smoking or does it flow over into everything. And, if not, why track just smoking?

I get it. I’m weird when it comes to stuff like this. But it keeps me off the streets!

And I want to make clear everyone has his/her own path. Whether you smoke once a month or 10 bowls a day, it’s all good. I can see my use increasing as I get older and have more time.

Google sheets is great because you can just download the app and have it there on your phone... makes it easy to do in real time. I just have a few pieces of info. I record— takes me all of 2 minutes, if that (it took me a bit to set up all the formulas, but once I did that, it’s just a few inputs and the formulas do the rest)

Cheers

Also, as you get older, the more you tell yourself WTF, like I want to live 20 more years anyways? I figure that if I live to see 70, I am going to start trying things that I just never saw any appeal in, like maybe smoke me some of that LSD or pot stuff. Try out over drinking more. See what I may have been missing out on. I'll be the hippest old man in the nursing home. puffy
