I’ve always assumed that the makers entries with a date next to them indicated the year in which the pipe name/series/brand was created.

However, in researching saseini seconds I see some entries which state “saseini 1930” as the maker, despite these lines not being produced until after ww2 (I think).

So what do the dates indicate then? The date the pipe’s name was registered? Or are they the name of the company (or trading as name) at the time when they were registered? Or should I just ignore the dates all together? Lol

cheers for any help.

ignore the dates altogether. Occasionally the date refers to an ad that led to an attribution. While the book is useful, if you don't already know a lot, it's entries will lead you in false directions. Sometimes model names are listed as brand names and vice versa. Tread carefully when using it.
