With the Mac Baren line being discontinued, what other makers describe their blends as “spun cut?” Is it a time-consuming process using specialized machinery? I enjoy Mac Baren Roll Cake Spun Cut (sans the vanilla) and have a few pounds cellared, but don’t know much about the process of combining Virginias and Mac Baren Original Cavendish, rounded off with a touch of burley. Thanks for any comments.IMG_9319.png

Wow! That is really handmade and labor intensive. Thank you Sutliff and Mac Baren artisans for all that deliciousness over the years. And, thank you Per Jensen, who I read was the impetus for bringing back this tradition to Mac Baren.

Thanks for locating and posting that video. Like I indicated, I have a couple of bulk pounds and several tins cellared, but I sure wish I had more. I sure don’t see spun cut being resurrected any time soon.

Can't say I know of anyone else. I don't think it's a very popular cut. Mac Baren has some very popular blends that happen to be spun cut, but I imagine it must be significantly more time/labor intensive than regular flakes and cakes, because you have to make many uniform rolls with less tobacco each instead of a single huge block.

Great picture! The Roll Cake is just our bestseller Mac Baren Mixture Scottish Blend wrapped with a Virginia Outer leaf. So we have Ready Rubbed Virginia, Ready Rubbed sweetened Burley and a Cavendish that we make out of Dark Fired Kentucky which we call Original Cavendish. These are wrapped in a full VA leaf, are rolled, then boxed, then cut, then dried, then placed in the pouch/tin/bag by hand.

We have two ladies that have rolled these tobaccos for decades now. I've had my try and have failed miserably.

Hopefully those two ladies are willing to move from Svenborg to Assens.

So those are the ingredients in the infamous Scottish blend, and then it's wrapped in a leaf to make Roll Cake? Thank you for sharing!
