    Cleaning up estates

I appreciate the advice, looks like I have some homework. Right now I’m just looking to clean them up so they’re smokable but I am also interested in maybe trying out some restoration as I enjoy tinkering and amateur woodworking.

When I have them in my possession I’ll add some pictures.

    Cleaning up estates

What’s your go to process for cleaning up estates? I recently have bought my first lightly smoked estate pipes and can’t quite find a clear thread in here about how to clean them up.

    Lighters vs Matches

I’ll have to give the spaghetti method a try for fun lol

    Lighters vs Matches

    Thank you very much!

    Lighters vs Matches

I have had a match head land on my hand already, it left a blister.

    Lighters vs Matches

I also only smoke outside so matches are a bit tricky when the wind kicks up. A zippo with the pipe insert will be my next bit of kit.

    Black Walnut Pipe

Yeah I carved a holder already I guess I’ll just carve some more

    Black Walnut Pipe

2 pipes I carved out of a random chunk of cherrywood with cheap Amazon stems.

    Black Walnut Pipe

I’ve tried my hand at carving a few pipes for fun and have enjoyed it even though the results weren’t anything impressive. Recently my friend gave my some chunks of black walnut to carve with, but I read that they are toxic so kinda bummed. I was wondering if I made an insert out of meerschaum...

    Lighters vs Matches

What I’m hearing is perfecting my pack will help and maybe for now getting a zippo or a butane lighter is a good idea. Do people have a problem with butane burning the bowl rim?

    Lighters vs Matches

Hello all, I took up pipe smoking a few months ago and have been enjoying it thoroughly. However I’ve been wondering what people prefer when it comes to lighting, matches or lighters. I’ve been using matches as they are quite cheap and my friend told me they are superior for pipe smoking but I...

    My Great-grandfather’s Pipe

I don’t plan on smoking it, at least not anytime soon. I appreciate the advice though if I ever feel confident enough to work on it without destroying it or having it restored by some one I’ll be sure to share it. I think most likely I’ll put on display.

    My Great-grandfather’s Pipe

I greatly appreciate the recommendations! I’ll have to look into it. I used to go to an ice cream place in Fresno CA called Ampersand.

    My Great-grandfather’s Pipe

Sadly I couldn’t tell you he definitely had it long before I was around and my dad remembers him smoking it when he was a kid very nostalgic to see it now to say the least.

    My Great-grandfather’s Pipe

Howdy Gents, Longtime lurker, have benefited greatly from all the advice on here, first time posting on the forum. I’m fairly new to the hobby, currently smoking out of an MM cob but I’d like to get some nicer pipes one day. So far I’ve only tried some aromatics, Lane BCA, black cherry and a...
