    Rattray's English/Scottish - too much choice...

I'm a big fan of Old Gowrie and recently tried 7 Reserve which I also find to be very good. Thinking I might have hit the motherload with Rattray's I've been reading reviews of 3 Noggins, Black Mallory and Red Rapparee till my eyes and brain hurt. Problem is that all four blends are Black...

    Hello from Cornwall UK

Hi again Mike, Here are a few suggestions that may help: Check out tobaccoreviews.com. Indispensable and fantastic resource for deciding what to squander your pension on next. Whole chunks of my life are spent on there. Could become a serious drain on your finances so be warned! A few...

    Hello from Cornwall UK

Hey Mike, Though previously smoked for the nicotine (began pipe at 18 when you could smoke everywhere - the good old days) either Gold Block or Capstan Blue Ready Rubbed. Choice was limited so you stuck with easily available blends that got the job done. This time around (now 69) I find I'm a...

    Hello from Cornwall UK

Hi Mike, and welcome from sunny Oldham, UK. I'd be treating myself to a couple of new bowls! Smoked Gold Block in days of yore myself. Came in a tin in those days and was decent stuff. As a returning pipe smoker myself I tried it again recently. One or both of us has changed. Won't be...

Oldest Tobacco blend In Continuous Production?

I did think of Gawith but whether the blend was actually around back then, or whether at some future date they were sat around twiddling thumbs trying to come up with a name I don't know. If the former then that would certainly beat Original Oriental. Geeky stuff, but I find it sort of...

Oldest Tobacco blend In Continuous Production?

I read on Tobacco Reviews that Robert McConnell's Original Oriental has been in production since the early 1800s. Pretty impressive. (I know it's now made by Kopp but that's beside the point). Seems that many (most?) blends have stood the test of time, many enjoying 100 years or more of...

    Do Aromatics Suck?

Four months into my return to pipe smoking and have tried many so called aromatics, naively believing the blurb. Perhaps there's a difference between the UK and US aromatics but all except GH American Delite and Black & Brown have been disappointing. Hardly any pouch note is evident in the...

    Inhalation

Same. Fifty years of smoking pipe/roll-ups including 12 years ofvaping. Inhaling is a reflex. I have found though that with my recent return to pipe smoking I don’t inhale half as much but once every so often a quick inhale as far as the throat definitely increases the enjoyment for me.

Greetings from sunny South Wales (UK)

Good stuff. Would be interesting to read an update with your impressions of each. I have a 'thing' for Special Virginia. The best of the OTC blends (for me) along with Ogden's Original. Can't get on with cobs, though. To quote someone on here it's 'like smoking a dog's ass'. Nearly bust a gut...

Greetings from sunny South Wales (UK)

Welcome from Oldham, UK. I'm also a recent new member but ancient pipe smoker. Couple of thoughts. Ive been tempted to order from overseas, but I don't think the hassle is worth it TBH, what with import duty/taxes and shipping costs. I'm happy to be proved wrong, though! For straight...

Can't Have Too Many Brits! Hello from Merrie Olde England...

Thanks. You lucky boy. Visited NJ not long after 9/11 - Old Bridge and environs, Freehold, Wildwood, Cape May. Was my first visit to the US (long story) and fell in love with place. I couldn't get over how much space the average household enjoys, compared to UK towns where there's no room to...

Can't Have Too Many Brits! Hello from Merrie Olde England...

Thanks! One of my fave jazz pianists came from Boise (IIRC) - the late, great Gene Harris. I always associate Boise with him.

    Less is More

I think you find this in most hobbies, enthusiasms or obsessions. Watches, fishing rods, outdoor gear, women (!) etc, etc. Some guys like to stick to one brand, some find no fun in that at all. Much depends on temperament and how much cash on the hip you have. I'm not a collector and don't...

Can't Have Too Many Brits! Hello from Merrie Olde England...

Hey Simon, Not sure whether it's still there TBH. I try to avoid Oldham Town centre if at all possible. Good candidate for inclusion in 'Cr*p Towns' (sister book to 'Cr*p Cars' on Amazon) if not in there already. To be fair, it's not as bad as it once was and much effort and money has been...

Can't Have Too Many Brits! Hello from Merrie Olde England...

Yes, exact name. It's broadcast Saturday evenings and produced by the BBC so won't be available on Sky. The BBC have an app called iPlayer where programmes are available after being broadcast. IPlayer requires that users have a TV licence though. Don't know whether there's a possible...

    Ancient Pipesmoker

Hi from Oldham, Gerry. Just joined myself a few days ago. I am also ancient and a Peterson and a Falcon fan. You're not me by any chance? Maybe I have a split personality...

What is Your Lighter of Choice?

TBH that's why I don't use my Zippo! Just the thing for scorching rims. Suppose you get the hang of it after a while but I don't need the hassle when there are less ferocious methods of setting fire to something inches from my nose hair...

What is Your Lighter of Choice?

Bog standard Clipper. I have a Peterson pipe lighter that can only be described as a lovely thing but that I only use occasionally for fear of dropping it. Madness, but there we are. As I get more ancient I'm becoming clumsy. The Clipper does the same job without the worry.

Can't Have Too Many Brits! Hello from Merrie Olde England...

Sorry! Location now added. Like you, I'm not particularly a football fan as such, though I'm a Yorkshireman by birth, originally from Bradford, West Yorkshire so keep a regular eye on Bradford City and watch the weekly TV show 'Match Of The Day' for Premier League shenanigans. Usually some...
