    Encouraging New Pipe Smokers

Samual Gawith’s Brown No.4 Twist is the nearest thing to cigars I’ve tasted without there being a cigar leaf in the blend. That would be a great baccy to convince a cigar smoker to try a pipe imo.

    Give Me A Recommendation…

Peterson’s ‘Old Dublin’ gets my vote, but not really an aromatic.

    Your Own "Best" Tobacco

I’m finding myself being more and more drawn towards straight forward Virginia/Burley/Kentucky blends that haven’t been heavily cased or topped. The blends that “do it” for me are G&H Dark Flake, SG’s Brown No.4 Twist and Revor Plug smoked in my Merchant Service ‘Standard’. The only aro that I...

    Peterson 2024 POY Release

Each to their own; I happen to love it. Difference is what keeps life interesting. It would be boring if we all liked the same things 😁

    Your Own "Worst" Tobacco

I honestly think our tastes might change through the early part of our lives but, by out autumn years they are pretty much set. However, that’s not to say we can’t try adapting something to fit our tastes. when I first tried Peterson’s De Luxe Navy Rolls I was completely underwhelmed; it...

Can Tobacco Change For The Worse?

Thanks for taking the time to reply chaps, I really appreciate it. with regards to some of the comments, the pipe i used was different to what I I used before bur its still fairly new and has only been smoked 3 times. And I always clean my pipes after smoking them. im wondering if it is me or...

Can Tobacco Change For The Worse?

That’s really interesting. The KC flakes are quite thick and they were not overly dry or moist. But when I opened the jar there was none of the delicious creaminess in the smell. I will give it another go shortly and see how it goes but it was so awful I don’t want to put myself through that...

Can Tobacco Change For The Worse?

Okay, this might sound like a daft question but is it possible for casing/topping to go off? The reason I ask is back in March I bought some SG Kendal Cream flake which I promptly jarred. I thought it tasted lovely back then. Today I wanted something different to smoke so I rubbed some out and...

Smoking to the Bottom of the Bowl.

The thing is it’s great to experiment but sometimes there’s no point in trying to reinvent the wheel. Tips from experienced pipers can save a lot of time and expense.

Smoking to the Bottom of the Bowl.

I use filters mainly but I’ve found no difference in how vit-N hits me. Filter or no filter it’s the same. Perhaps you just have a higher tolerance to it. Personally, I like the affect but not when I accidentally over do it, much like alcohol.

Smoking to the Bottom of the Bowl.

Sound like you’re smoking too much GH Dark Flake 😂

Smoking to the Bottom of the Bowl.

Don’t they get a bit bitter?

Smoking to the Bottom of the Bowl.

What do you do with the excess from the flakes? Do you just rub it out for later smoking or blend it with other baccies?

    Beat the Gurgling!! Here's how . . . . .

I use the breath method and if I start to get the gurgles I just blow the smoke back into the bowl a few times, slightly quicker and a bit harder. The extra heat generated seems to evaporate any moisture and gurgling stops. if I had to grind up three sizes of charcoal in order to smoke my pipe...

    Peterson Emerald Question

I currently have a Peterson Emerald 221 which I love. It’s the perfect design, weight and balance for me and I love how it smokes. The only problem is sometimes it’s a bit on the small side. It’s great if I only have half a hour to spare but on the days I have more time I just wish it was...

    Folding And Stuffing Flakes

Rattray’s Stirling Flakes seem to be an absolutely perfect fit for my Peterson Emerald 221. They fold and stuff perfectly. Tbh, I think I was overpacking the bowl and wasn’t allowing for expansion of the baccy. A single flake is enough for this pipe and although it seems quite loose the way it...

    Folding And Stuffing Flakes

I’m thinking that there are several factors at play with fold and stuff. The baccy needs to be virtually dry. The pipe must not be too narrow. When folded the flakes almost need to have a rubbed out consistency to them. And what I’ve found to be really important is to not overfill the pipe...

    Folding And Stuffing Flakes

I’m starting to think you’re right. I’ve tried it several times now and it’s about a 50:50 success rate but tbh, I’m not finding the smoke any more enjoyable or easier than just rubbing out and packing normally. Maybe it works with the massive pipes but For me it’s a fine line between a decent...

    Folding And Stuffing Flakes

Thanks for all the advice guys, I really appreciate it. I definitely think you’re right about the GH tobaccos. Today I tried the fold and stuff with Peterson Irish Flake. The flakes are cut to the perfect size so no guesswork here. One flake was enough for my Emerald 221 and bingo! It fitted...
