    Shamrocks & Shenanigans 2024

All I can think to post is the Lorica, the Breastplate of St Patrick. An 11th century prayer in old Irish, one of a class or type of litany-like protective prayers against various evils to be found in the Liber Hymnorum kept at Trinity College, which would make it younger than the saint by a...

A new pipe waiting to be smoked, “Irish Army” quarter-bent Dublin, mounted in nickel. Shape No. 124.

    What are You Reading Now?

I could not agree more, at least as far as the Chronicles of Barset go. I have never gotten round to starting on the Palliser novels — I know I have them somewhere in the house and must start on them after this one.

    What are You Reading Now?

A (generally) gently and affectionately satirical look at love, ecclesiastical affairs and controversies in the Established Church in England in the 1850s. I suppose the scheming Low Church chaplain Obadiah Slope (one of a long line of English literary villains cut of a similar bolt of cloth —...

***What Are You Smoking, March 2024?***

The last of theGermain’s 1820, in a Butz-Choquin capped billiard. “Rodéo”, though I see no immediate connection with either horsemanship or cattle mustering — can anyone enlighten me?

What Are You Listening To - March, 2024

Piae Cantiones ecclesiasticae et scholasticae veterum episcoporum — published at Greifswald in 1582. Latin song and devotional of the cathedral schools of the early modern Baltic area. Utterly beautiful from an aesthetic point of view, and personally from a devotional one. I suppose a British...

    What are You Reading Now?

A charming light book — Isn’t there a crazed sexton who keeps badgering J. and Harris to come and see some skulls in the church crypt? And an episode involving three strong cheeses that get buried on a beach as the owner is eager to be rid of them, turning the place into a health resort?

My Butz-Choquins you mean? I like them very much — and by no means expensive. Sadly they went under in September 2019, “liquidation judiciare“ . Both of these are old stock bought more recently. I do tend to fuss over them with briar and stem polish.

And another, my liseuse — the shape of the bowl is very pleasing to hold. Also Butz-Choquin, a “Carat” with acrylic shank. Said to look like polished shell, mine resembles agate or smoked quartz I think. I would like to find the shorter-stemmed Carat D version as well.

Up with What are You Lighting ?

Swan matches for me - still annoyed by the new box! I was tempted by one of the Peterson lighters but find that a fluid lighter, for me, gives an “off “ taste. I don’t know about gas and would sooner spend the money on more tobacco, I suppose, or another pipe.

    The Dying Swan

I first got one of these new boxes yesterday — they don’t fit my Vesta case either! Mutters blackly… And yes, the old pink-headed matches were much better.

What Tobacco did your Ancestors Smoke?

My maternal grandfather was Scottish. He was an accountant and always smoked Revor Plug. It was made for the Scottish Co-Operative shops, a movement related to the Labour Party. A working man’s tobacco, strong and then not expensive. My aunt used to buy far more expensive blends only to find he...

What's the Best Way to Clean a Pipe?

Savinelli make a small bottle of a Chartreuse green coloured pipe-cleaning fluid — I haven’t a notion what the chemical makeup is and probably shouldn’t understand it if I were told, but I find that it keeps the bore of a pipe and stem inoffensively clean. Scrape out any ash with pipe tool...

    What are You Reading Now?

Dylan Foster, “The Book of Yōkai”. Popular academic compendium on Japanese folk creatures and phenomena ranging from the oni (wild brawlers, bandits, ogres ) through the famous kappa, the tsukumogami (neglected household items that become animate), a maiden with a disfigured face who accosts...

***What Are You Smoking, March 2024?***

Germain’s 1820 Mixture, Butz-Choquin liseuse - the charming French name for a Churchwarden. It’s Lesepfeife in German, both refer to reading as opposed to our English idea of a sexton (keeping an eye out for resurrection men? Perhaps a detail added by the man who told me) smoking through the...
