    Thoughts on Tongue Bite.

Heh. That burning sensation you feel when extremely hot particulate matter enters your mouth... who knows what's causing it? My brother in Christ, try thinking with your head instead of your rear end. It's smarter. Well, mine is. Mostly.

Then why is there a medical condition recognized by science as being caused by extreme heat in the mouth? And why do roughly half of pipe smokers have it?

    Thoughts on Tongue Bite.

Sure, but my buffoonery led to something positive. @cosmicfolklore cleared up the issue of bad temperature readings on the internet, thereby edifying everyone present in the thread. So... you're welcome. nnnn

Apologize for what? You didn't come off as dickish.

That's true, but not in the way you think :ROFLMAO:

Fair enough. That'll be my next step, I suppose.

A bed of coal can't, but a furnace of coal can. https://www.britannica.com/topic/coal-utilization-122944/Coal-combustion >>>>"The burning of coal can produce combustion gases as hot as 2,500 °C (4,500 °F)"<<<<< https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrous_metallurgy >>>>"Iron was originally smelted...

Youtube age-restricted it for some reason. Click where it says "watch on youtube", and youtube will open with the video. It's not enough to know that professionals have all said the same thing. I would have to know what led them to believe it. You're right, though, maybe if I contact them they...

That describes everyone on this forum, especially me. If you touched your finger to 900°c for a fraction of a second, it wouldn't even burn you. Here's a video of a guy slapping molten metal. Molten steel is roughly 2000°f, but because he touches it for such a short time, very little of...

    Thoughts on Tongue Bite.

No way. What chemical does it have that other tobaccos don't? Tobacco smoke in general has chemicals that cause cancer, but something toxic enough to burn your mouth is another story. If toxic chemicals were the cause, then how come cigars don't cause tongue bite until you smoke down to the nub...

Try charcoal filters and/or longer pipes. They worked for me. Another point I forgot to bring up -- cigars don't cause tongue bite unless you smoke it down to a tiny stub. This is probably because the smoke passes through the whole cigar, which acts as a filter for those larger smoke particles...

A-ha, more anecdotal evidence. I posit a slower drag means a longer travel time for the smoke, resulting in smoke particles dissipating heat, aka 'cooler smoke'. It lists references at the bottom. What makes you think that's a chemical burn? I thought it was caused by rough edges of the sugar...

That's the burning temp of tobacco. Naturally, most of that temperature dissipates within seconds. You can't weld steel using tobacco embers because the embers won't sustain a high temperature long enough to transfer sufficient heat to melt the steel.

    Thoughts on Tongue Bite.

Well, like I mentioned, tobacco burns at 1400°F, which means for a few fractions of a second the smoke particles have a temperature at or near 1400°F, and the only reason we can tolerate the smoke is because the particles cool so quickly during their trip through the pipe stem. The cheese pizza...

    Thoughts on Tongue Bite.

Fair enough, but I'm going to push it until it's been thoroughly refuted. So far, every issue mentioned can be explained by this one factor. For instance: The fact that tongue bite is focused where the smoke enters the mouth seems to indicate heat as the culprit. Heat dissipates quickly, but...

    Thoughts on Tongue Bite.

Right, but what's the reason for believing it's an allergic reaction and not just a higher burn temp? Has anyone identified which components in the curing process people are allergic to? It shows that pipe smokers are exposed to temperatures high enough to cause damage to their mouth. I bet if...

"Nor is the person who writes that impaired" That's an interesting sentence. Care to de-mystify the creative grammar you've employed, dearest mod?

    Thoughts on Tongue Bite.

You can't be allergic to just one type of tobacco. Tobacco will burn hotter/cooler depending on how it was treated. I'm willing to bet these problem varieties burn at a hotter temperature, and some people just have more sensitive mouths and perhaps don't take precautions like gentle sipping or...
