My progress so far and a question about buffing.

I've actually been wondering about that. How to you keep from sanding off stampings and makers marks without leaving dull poorly finished spots all around them?

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

Eh. I got impatient. Here it is in all its glory! My $50 basket pipe. Sure looks good though.

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

I had the pipe dyed, had it buffed up pretty well and was just about to switch over to the wax wheel and I bumped into the chuck of the drill press while it was still in motion and made a pretty mess of the rim of the pipe..... Anyway, I now have a pipe with a nicely finished bowl and a natural...

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

Update: So I stripped the wax off and re-sanded, starting at around 3,600 grit and going back up to 12,000 grit. I then buffed it on my drill press using a medium stiffness cotton wheel and "White Rouge". Here is a nice big picture of it so you can see the fine details...

What Happens When Folks Don't Research Before Restoring Pipes...

I was in Seattle over the weekend and I ended up walking about 4 miles from Pike Place back to my hotel in the U district. Every few blocks I would get a good whiff of weed. It was crazy.

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

All my pipes are beater pipes. I've been buying junky pipes and learning how to fix them up. The only "good" pipe I have is a Sav Oscar and it smokes terribly. My junky looking basket pipes are far superior XD. I'll head out to the hardware store and pick up a different wheel and some white...

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

One of the setting on my press is 1720 RPM, so I should be golden. I'll just have to go check all the hardware stores in town for white diamond compound. I'm still not clear on the buffing wheels though. It seems I should start with a more firm dense wheel for the abrasive compound and then use...

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

I've got my buffing wheel chucked in a drill press now. So I have plenty of power and I can adjust it to whatever speed I want. I'm just wondering if jewelers rouge would work because I happen to have a tube on hand already. I've actually never seen white diamond compound in a hardware store and...

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

One more question. I'll be heading to the hardware store today for a different wheel and some compound. Why white diamond? Why not jewelers rouge or blue multipurpose? I've done so much sanding at this point that basically all I need to do is remove haze. It seems white diamond is a tad too...

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

I thought about heating it up and was going to resort to that if necessary, but everything I have read indicates the wheel should heat up the wax enough to load itself. So I cant help but feel I'm doing something wrong.

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

Is it safe to buff the stem with white diamond? I didn't really want to work with any abrasive buffing compounds because it seems like what is good for the stem is bad for the wood and vice versa. I could buy two more wheels and buff the the stem and bowl separately I suppose. And for the record...

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

Extra virgin olive oil. The oil-under-wax technique seems to be pretty tried and true with other woodworking hobbies, so I figured it would be fine with a pipe. I like how it turned out, but I just cant seem to get any wax on it and I'm not sure what to change.

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

I sanded it with micromesh first and then put a little oil on the wood to make the grain pop. I'm not sure what RPM I'm at. However fast this old Black & Decker drill happens to go.

My progress so far and a question about buffing.

So this is what my Brewster looks like so far. I may go back and re-sand it at some point since I think I rushed some of the steps a bit, but for now its good enough. I have been trying to apply carnauba wax to the surface with a Dico medium buffing wheel. But I don't think I'm even getting any...

Dont skin me, but I have a question about glass pipes.

Alright so I guess it wouldn't be as neat as it seemed in my minds eye. I just imagined it producing the pure flavor of a meerschaum at the price point of a cob. Maybe it would, as long as you were willing to wear an oven mit and fitted a 40MM NATO filter to the pipe. Thank you folks for...

Dont skin me, but I have a question about glass pipes.

I have been wondering lately if there is any reason you can not make a proper tobacco pipe out of glass. I brought this particular question up on Reddit a few days ago and I was met with a lot of negativity and guffawing about how terrible weed pipes are, but very little actual information on...

Trying to figure out what I like.

I'm wary of the perique because I simply did not find the Escudo to be all that pleasing even before I got sick. It was certainly not bad and I wont have any trouble finishing my tin, (one small bowl at a time, of course) but it just did not seem all that great either. It seemed to taste a bit...

Trying to figure out what I like.

Food: I tend to like strong flavors such as blue cheese, onions, and sauerkraut paired with savory things such as read meat or earthy tasting heavily crusted breads. Beverage of choice: Water? I'll drink just about anything. Beer and wine are probably the only things I don't like at all...

Trying to figure out what I like.

So I'm trying to branch out and figure what tobacco I like, what I don't and try new things. I've only smoked a few blends. I tried a few cheap aromatics when I got my first pipe and then I tried some English Oriental Supreme. It was good, it was cheap, and it was locally available so that's...

    Refinishing vs Reshaping

Is my question unclear? Perhaps I should post a picture of what I'm talking about. http://i.imgur.com/c6upwt3.jpg This isn't the best example but its all I have handy. Notice how all the edges on the rim of my Kaywoodie are rounded? That's the sort of stuff I'm talking about. I could sand that...
