    Barling’s Make Question

Hi Barling’s expert! I can’t read the logo because it’s faint. Judging from the tenon, does this look like a Barling’s Make family tenon-stem? Thanks folks!

Pick 5 Countries. Who from each makes/made the Best Pipes Under 500$?

Let’s talk about objective criteria as much as possible. I’m talking about shaping, stem-work, engineering, etc. Objective means, “I don’t like that shape but it’s well-done.” I realize that there’s a subjective element here but I’m talking about things you think you can defend with objective...

    LC Shape by Tristan

By Pipe Tristan. What does this remind you of? Maybe because of the almost-nude finish, it reminds me of a Becker. The elegance of it is French though.

    Canadian Ian Barnes

I love the blast, stain, and cheeky design. I snagged this online Smokingpipes. I then contacted Mr. Barnes who is extremely friendly. He seems to have been on a hiatus but watch out for new pipes.

    Intolerance to Most Tobaccos

So, I’ve persisted in pipe smoking because I do love the hobby/pastime but I’ve had quite a time of it figuring out what tobacco I can tolerate. The answer is that I have a reaction to all but a few kinds. I can smoke Dunhill/Peterson’s Virginia flake and Navy rolls. I also seem to tolerate...

    New-ish Pipe-Maker Wolff

Christophe Wolff is a French pipe-maker. He’s rather new. I decided to take a chance but I’m thrilled with this pipe and his workmanship. I think he’s talented and will become better known.

    Replacement Stem: Dunhill Patent?

A year or two ago I posted this question because I felt this stem was soft. Now, I think it could very well be that some type of cement repair was used on the button which leads to scuffing. Could this be a real original Dunhill stem On this ‘52 patent? The problem is that the tenon is a...

Should I Pick it Up Again and Smoke It?

My question really is: After smoking some of your pipe and putting it down, after about how long will it taste bad to pick it back up and smoke it? I mean, can you leave it for several hours? How about overnight? What do YOU do?

The 1000th Question About Why Folks Spend on a Dunhill

https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/dunhill/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=595431 4,880$ Aside from the fact that Dunhill can charge what the market will bear, I’m curious what kind of person spends 5 grand for this little 2022 new “Dead Root” pot. I have some vintage Dunhills and I do appreciate...

I don’t think the last thread on this was active so this can be deleted if I’m wrong. The reason I was attracted to this C-B the shaping of the shank to stem. That really caught me in a way that other C-Bs hadn’t. It’s elegant.

    Patent Dunhill Extra Shape Number?

I’m sorry that I asked this in a few places but I’d really like to get more ideas on this if possible. 56 is the shape number on this 1950 Dun. Does anyone know what the “-62” means?

    Questions about Non-Ebonite Stems

Just a few questions for anyone that wants to discuss this topic (which has already been discussed). #1: Why was there a general trend towards plastics in Italian pipe-making? #2 Is “pearlized” a meaningful category in stems? What is it? #3 I’ve seen BBB’s tortoise stems described as having a...

    Charatan Restoration of Sorts

I said I wouldn’t buy this but I did. As you would expect with a Charatan, clearing the oxidation was a job. Me thinks this is a Rueben (inedible)? It’s quite small, 24 grams (as shown in the ‘51 catalogue). I’m not sure though. Very small pipe, two digit #, no letters…Rueben? Late Rueben? I got...

Memories of Charatan Pipes by Ivy Ryan

Many of you may have read this Wikipedia article before (by someone named Ivy Ryan) but it’s full of wonderful observations by someone who claims to have visited the Charatan factory and to have spent time drinking and chatting with long-time carvers and employees of the company. There’s also a...
