***What Are You Smoking, January 2023?***

35°, gloomy, and about to rain. British prince with new Night Train. I was in a hurry, so not a great pipe. 6/10

    Cellaring Too Long?

This is important to keep in mind. It will change, but there's no guarantee it will get better to you with time. Some of the flavor notes that make you appreciate a blend might disappear with aging. I know that's been my experience.

    Estate Pipes-OK?

I would imagine a quickly rinsed glass at a bar has more bacteria and cooties on it than a properly cleaned estate pipe. And after the bartender has handled money, credit cards, peoples smart phones, etc...and then handled the rim of your glass, I'll put twice the money down that a properly...

***What Are You Smoking, January 2023?***

Friction Tape for Protection on Stem?

Have you tried non-toxic FDA grade translucent polyethylene tubing? The stuff they use on water softeners. You can buy it by the foot, in various diameters, at any hardware store. $1-1.50/ft, and it only takes 1.25"s to do a pipe. Comes in black, clear, clear green, and probably other colors...

    Unsubscribed

I've tried to nicely, diplomatically recommend to youtubers to not have long intros. Nobody wants to watch your 25-second intro every time they click into your feed. I get that they're proud of their editing, put in some work, and want to squeeze every last drop out of that effort, but...not...

***What Are You Smoking, January 2023?***

25° and overcast. Stanwell with new 507-C. A very good smoke. 7.5/10 Did they change the thickness of 507-C? Someone sent me a sample a couple months ago. I'm not sure how old it was or if it had any age on it, but they were almost twice as thick as this new order.

***What Are You Smoking, January 2023?***

28° and breezy. British second, saddle stem, sandblasted tan bulldog with Stokkebye 41. A decent smoke. 7/10 This pipe was surely a bucket pipe, but in today's market, it could have easily been a first. Light as balsa wood with a great, very hard sound when rapped with a knuckle.

    Finding What you Really Like

That's Donald Sutherland. I'm guessing from either the original MASH movie or Kelly's Heroes. Now, back to the OP. I'm going to offer a counter-argument to more more more. I feel one of the issues with newer smokers is trying to absorb the giant pipe smoking learning curve all at once, or at...

    Open McClelland Question

Honestly, I never thought much of their English blends. I smoked them here and there because I wanted to change my pace and because they were readily available in shops or wherever. As for their virginia blends, there were a few that I thought were special, but many of them were just average...

    Favorite alcohol for pipe cleaning/sweetening

Right. On one of these here pipe boards, I think someone experimented with running briar through a full dishwasher cycle and then cut the pipe in half on a band saw to see how deeply the water had penetrated/how much water the wood had soaked up. After a 2-hour cycle, the water had barely...

    Favorite alcohol for pipe cleaning/sweetening

My first choice would be Bacti-Stat AE. I like it the best, but it is a specialty soap and not readily found. I only know of it because it was gifted to me. Dawn isn't far behind, and most folk have some in the house. I've used both Dawn and Palmolive dishwashing soap. If you have a really...

    Favorite alcohol for pipe cleaning/sweetening

yes, sir. works fantastic. I spent the first few decades of pipe smoking worrying about even night mist getting near my briar pipes, only using IPA. Did some of my own experiments, because I was still dense and over-protective. Came to find out that running water and soap do no damage to the...

    Favorite alcohol for pipe cleaning/sweetening

91% IPA. only on estates. Once I've finished the original cleaning, I now only use water, soap, and a tube brush.
