    Mac Baren’s Investment in SNUS

Per Jensen in his interview by Italian piper Apple Pipe exhibited some disdain for this snus venture. I took it that may have contributed to Mac Baren's losses.

    Just in from STG/MacBaren/Sutliff

What is the logic in ceasing distribution of blends in the U.S. if they are still going to be produced for other regions?

    Just in from STG/MacBaren/Sutliff

The Newminster line was a bizarre effort between STG and MacB. Most of those blends are based on preexisting STG blends(Peter Stockebye) but produced by MacB. I never could make sense of this. I think Kramer's is C&D.

    Prince Albert

I don't know about the new stuff but the old version didn't taste of anise at all. What I think people are referring to is licorice root which gives a certain pronounced sweetness depending on dosage. Licorice root along with cocoa are standard casings for these traditional American burley...

    Ah, That McClellands Smell

No, not the farmers. It's added in manufacture.

    Ah, That McClellands Smell

It's worse than that. That tang in their red virginia crumble cakes is sodium diacetate. It's a food additive that gives slaty-sour flavor and also a preservative. It was ubiquitous in the tobacco industry and Sutliiff used it liberally. Ever notice that metallic sour note in their aromatics...

Looking to age this box of velvet.

A quick search in the Tobacco Archives produced this hit. It's just starting point and with a lot of work you might be able to nail down the exact promotion or confine it to a more limited time frame. The latter link was the initial search criteria: NEW! VELVET-GRANGER PIPE OFFER...

Looking to age this box of velvet.

The cut looks exactly how I remember Velvet when I tried it around 30 years ago. Granger back then wasn't the ribbon it is today but a loosely compressed ready-rubbed cut.

    Burley Blends Available in UK?

Decades ago, when it was available in the states I tried JF Germain's Brown Flake. It was described as virginia leaf but it seemed like it was an air-cured variety and therefore smoked more akin to a very mild straight burley. Assuming it hasn't changed much this might suffice. I've heard of a...

Is Gawith the Only Blending House Making Dark Fired Virginia Blends?

Based on STG's scorched earth intentions for Sutliff I doubt they'll sell off Mac Barens equipment to competitors. I have thought along those lines but realize the cost for design and build of such proprietary equipment if it can't be bought second hand could be astronomical, like in the six or...

    My favorite is gone

I bought a tin of that stuff over 20 years ago. From what I remember it was just the most straight forward unflavored white burley cube tobacco. Try Sutliff TS4 White Cube Burely. Very similar in flavor from what I can recall. It's a bigger and chunkier cut but can be rubbed out. On the premium...

    Sutliff Mixture 79 Cherry Brandy

I have come across this too and considered buying a tub. But I thought to contact them before just to make sure it's not an old defunct listing that just hasn't been taken down; I haven't done so. I bought a pouch decades ago and still have it though what's left over is dry as a bone. From what...

Favorite Crossover Blend With Some Strength

Mac Baren Solent Mixture. Predominately ribbon cut virginia, small amount of burley, about 20% latakia and 10% Mac Baren's classic dark-fired cavendish and a rum-molasses casing. Sort of a beefed up version of Plumbcake but the molasses element seems heavier.

    "Mature Virginia" Rope?

I have not tried these blends but they be in line for what you're looking for: Wessex Curley Block Peter Heinrich's Curly Special You may also like Rattrays Marlin Flake which I have tried. It's a moderately cased predominately virginia flake that has a darker fruity character.

    Burley Highest TSNA Concentrations

I wouldn't be surprised if the TSNAs in these highly processed OTC and domestic bulk burley blends are much lower than the documentation suggests. Ever notice the nicotine is negligible? Nicotine is water soluble and is likely leached out during that high moisture processing. I looked up TSNAs...

    Iwan Ries Blends

Their Three Star blends are mostly variations on the same base tobaccos that are similar to Mixture 79 without the heavier anise flavor. It's been quite a few years since I tried many of these blends, but I have revisited Three Star Blue in the last couple of years and all I can say is it...

    Mixing Tobaccos

I had a similar idea with Mixing Mac Baren Old Dark Fired with St. Bruno. I wouldn't be surprised if they are comprised of the same base tobaccos and production method, just in different proportions. Old Dark Fired is St. Bruno's fat sister with no make-up on.

    Anise / Licorice

If Warhorse green doesn't have enough anise for your taste, then the only thing more potent in flavor I can think of are Avanti Annisette and Avanti Licorice cigars. The Anisette ones are truly over the top in aromatic flavor. I can't stand them. The Licorice ones are a bit tamer and have a...

    Do Aromatics Suck?

Pretty much, they suck. The industry went through that period in the 90s of ingredient restrictions that rendered aromatic tobacco far less flavorful. Even some premium blends severely suffered like Gold Block. But the larger problem with these goopy aromatics I think has to do with the way they...
