    Favorite Codger Blend

My favorite is a bulk match version of Carter Hall, definitely going to pick up a tub of the real stuff when I run low. It's in my regular rotation and I smoke it more than anything else. Rarely go a week without it. It seems to re-center my palate when latakia blends or aromatics lose their...

    Real Men Don't Use Emojis

I use emojis sometimes when texting women. It helps to convey "tone of voice" in written form. Without them, women sometimes have a habit of reading a tone into things that wasn't intended, so emojis can help with that.

    Recommendations Needed On English-Aro Crossovers

I tried some Sutliff 504C Aromatic English recently and liked it. I thought I had seen it described as more aromatic and less English, but it seemed the other way around to me. More like an English with some extra subtle sweetness, but your mileage may vary. I liked it much more than HGL.

    Hot Dogs.

Just made some hotdogs tonight. Didn't feel like lighting the grill, so I fried them up in some butter until they were nicely browned. Then threw in some sliced onions and sauteed until they were starting to soften, and then some sauerkraut and a splash of beer. Kept it cooking until most of...

    PipesAndCigars.Com: Are They Trustworthy?

I've ordered from them 3 times, and had no issues. They have some things that I like that I can't get anywhere else.

    Aftertaste

I started to like it after a few months.

    Nicotine Absorption

I feel like I get 75% of the nicotine from the last 25% of the bowl. Maybe even 80/20. The time it takes to kick in could be a factor, but I never feel any obvious effects unless I finish the bowl.

    Retrohaling

I literally just exhale through my nose with smoke in my mouth, and the smoke comes out my nose. I never could understand why some people find it difficult. Trouble breathing through the nose generally? Maybe I'm just lucky.

    Post Covid Tasting Change

I can't speak to the flavor of pipe tobacco, since I didn't have much experience with it pre-covid, but my flavor experience of certain things has definitely changed. Some herbs, particularly thyme and oregano, seem stronger and harsher to me now. And I used to like those strong "ginger beer"...

    What Do You Do?

Used to be a logger, tried raising cattle for a while but that was a disaster. Now I'm a professional leatherworker. Which is why I stick to bulk blends, cobs, and cheap estate pipes.

Pack Like Drinking Through a Straw?

I'm finally just beginning to figure it out myself, and I find that descriptions of how much resistance there should be on the draw are completely useless. I just stuff some in and gauge it by how springy it is, but it varies hugely depending on the cut of tobacco, moisture level and the...

What if There's a Fly in Your Pint Glass?

My cousin had a fit once when there was a fly in a bottle of home brew I gave him. Could have been worse, at least it wasn't a mouse.

    Sick from Smoking??

FWIW, I trust strangers on a pipe smoking forum more than I trust doctors. You're lucky if they're just incompetent, and not an incompetent bastard. Just my experience, lol. I would definitely at least try not smoking for a while, if you have that adverse of a reaction. Eat healthier and get...

I Hated Half & Half—Because of the Burley?

Turns out it was just operator error, for me. I like half and half, and more burley-heavy codger-ish blends, when I can get them going right. I don't even get the anise or spice notes that others dislike in half and half, although I did spike mine with a dribble of bourbon before packing it in...

5 Months In, I Still Have No Idea How to Pack a Pipe

I had come to that conclusion before, seemed like an improvement but the results weren't reliable. I might have overcorrected and packed it too tight. A little tighter and a little more moisture would seem to be the fix, if I can find the sweet spot.

5 Months In, I Still Have No Idea How to Pack a Pipe

Since the party line here is "dry more and pack looser," I tried that--again. I've been sticking with Half and Half to narrow things down, since that was my last enjoyable smoke. Got it as dry as I could by leaving it spread out on a paper plate overnight. It's not crispy, but dry to the...

5 Months In, I Still Have No Idea How to Pack a Pipe

That's one thing I've managed to figure out myself. At a certain point, I just kind of stir up the surface of the ashes and tip some out. Too much and it tastes weird, just enough and it seems to improve things.

5 Months In, I Still Have No Idea How to Pack a Pipe

I have better luck with some pipes than others, but basically the same issue with all of them. Lately I only use 2 or 3 of them regularly to cut down on the possible variables. I clean them out after every smoke, sometimes with a little whiskey on a pipe cleaner if it needs it.

5 Months In, I Still Have No Idea How to Pack a Pipe

I'll try paying more attention to that next time, but generally I smoke pretty slow. On the edge of going out a lot of the time. I catch myself reflexively smoking faster sometimes when it tastes bad. Trying to get to the "good part," or trying to get it over with faster, lol.
