    Dublin Shapes and Tobacco Choices

And for the sake of clarity, by 'bowl' I guess I mean 'chamber.' Bowl being a vessel; I'm speaking about the interior of the stummel - which per the Collins dictionary is 'the bowl of a (smoking) pipe.

    Dublin Shapes and Tobacco Choices

I like Virginias and VaPers in my Dublins, though I am certainly no expert. But the narrower, conical bowls seem to work well with them, especially when in flake form. Better, say, than wider or more cylindrical bowls. Just one man's take.

    Your Favorite Straight Virginia

I'm very new to the pipe and have smoked hardly any straight Virginias. I have a couple of the heavy favorites in my very modest collection (aged tins of F&T CVP and SG BBF) but I haven't tried them yet. However, I recently grabbed some samples of various GH tobaccos, and both the Glengarry...

***What are You Smoking, March 2022?***

GH Brown Twist in a Missouri Pride cob, with a bit of tawny port to wet the whistle. Lovely.

    Recommend Me a Tobacco

While certainly not an English in the strictest sense, if you want to try something outside of the Latakia camp but still want to get your smoke on, you might consider MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired, as it will definitely meet the criteria for something strong and flavorfully satisfying. With great...

Fruity/Figgy Perique Blends for the Red-Sensitive Smoker

I'm a relative newcomer to the pipe, so fair warning. The first flake I ever tried was Drexel VIII. I found it to be very nice, not bitey, and definitely plum/raisin forward - a very positive experience. Some may scoff; it's now a bargain basement blend that may not be available for too much...

***What are You Smoking, March 2022?***

Enjoying some vintage Sugar Barrel in this chunky EA Carey Magic Inch coachman - a nice, easy smoke to start the day.

Pineapple on Pizza: Yea or Nay?

Absolutely. Hawaiian or BBQ chicken pizzas should have pineapple on them. I've enjoyed pizzas with other fruits on them as well, such as pear, fig, and very thinly sliced citrus. Nothing wrong with any of these on a pizza when they're paired with the right ingredients. Nuts too.

    Coniston Cut Plug

@Ryan, I too bought a mix of GH blends from SP a couple weeks back and I'm slowly working through sampling them. My choices were Coniston, Glengarry, Dark Flake Aro, Brown Flake Aro, Brown Twist, and a couple tins of Rum Flake; these will be the first GH tobaccos I've tried. So far, I've only...

    Recent TAD Pick-Ups

2 oz each of GH Glengarry Flake, Brown Flake Aro, Dark Flake Aro, Coniston Cut Plug, and Brown Twist, plus 2 tins of Rum Flake. Mmmm, it all smells so good!!

GH Drop - What'd You Order?

    Bag label says Kendal #7.

GH Drop - What'd You Order?

I picked up a sampler selection of Dark Flake Aro, Brown Flake Aro, Coniston, Glengarry, Brown Twist, and a couple of tins of Rum Flake. Really looking forward to having some G&H in the pantry!

Sweetening up this Berwyck wire-brushed Dublin with some OGS. Drinking Earl Grey and feeling shrewd.

Pipe(s) That You Will Never Smoke...

I have a couple that I haven't smoked, both from the '50s I would say - a little Buescher cob that's never been smoked and an estate Jobey poker that just hasn't made it into the rotation yet.

    5 Pieces of Advice

    1. Start with a decent sized cob and some classic OTC tobacco. Consider using a filter - not necessary, but helpful for some. Many cobs will accept a filter. 2. Plan to dry the tobacco a bit, pack light, tamp very gingerly, and smoke very slowly (repeat this mantra). 3. Try to relax and not...

    Vintage American Pipes

I have a few interesting American pipes that I bought secondhand, a Briarcraft panel billiard, a Middleton's bulldog, and an E. A. Carey Magic Inch coachman. They are all beautiful pipes and excellent smokers. I have a Jobey as well, a solid, handsome poker, but I haven't smoked it yet. Carey...

***What Are You Smoking, February 2022?***

Today's smokes were Granger in my Medico back-of-the-box offer egg, followed by some Hansom Flake in a MM Washington poker cob. It was my first go with the current STG Granger, having only ever smoked some well-aged Pinkerton era product before today. I was pleased with the taste - it remains...

    That Old School Aroma

I smoked some vintage Sugar Barrel recently, and that's exactly how the odor of the smoke from that tobacco struck me - like an old school tobacco shop where the guy behind the counter was smoking a pipe. Just a really comforting fragrance. Maybe Carter Hall or Granger or Derby Club will do...

I Cannot Smoke Peterson University Flake, Little Help?

I have really enjoyed reading this entire thread. I have a tin of UF on deck, and having never tried it before AND being a new pipe smoker as well, I took a keen interest in the issues and solutions tossed around over the course of the thread. My experience with flakes has been limited mostly...
