I'm surprised that Tom Sawyer hasn't been mentioned.

    Summer Grilling and Chilling

Or skewer the meat first and the vegetables last on each skewer. Unload the vegetables when they're done and leave the meat on longer.

    Happy Easter to the Forum!

A Happy Easter to everyone as well, My F-I-L, age 86, fell and broke his neck. Because of covid he hasn't been allowed visitors in the hospital for nearly two months. They recently pinned and screwed him back together with no paralysis and is at a rehab hospital We're taking him a picnic Easter...

    My Garden is Almost Planted

Pollinating avocados is tricky. There are "A" and "B" species that must be cross pollinated. To get fruit I need to find out which species of avocado I have growing, and find an avocado tree that is of a species that can pollinate them.

Consider Writing A Letter, I Mean Snail Mail

I write letters to my daughter in Los Angeles pretty regularly. Now that my son is working in Salt Lake City, I'll start corresponding with him as well.

What are You Drinking? April 2022

Evan Williams White Label bottled in bond is actually very good, IMHO.

    My Garden is Almost Planted

I got a lesson in patience. Last year a good friend gave us a bag of avocados, no idea of the variety though---smaller, thin skinned and small pits, but certainly delicious. I saved the last two pits and did the toothpicks and glass of water thing. Both rooted and cracked, one even sprouted so...

    My Garden is Almost Planted

Well, 21 onion sets have made themselves known at last count. The Big Beef tomato didn't survive so I replaced it with a Brandywine. I also planted a six pack of Poblanos that have already blossomed. They looked root bound so I cut and "X" in the bottom of the root ball, spread them out and...

    What to Try Next?

I've got a tin of SG Squadron Leader. I've enjoyed some Squadron Leader a few years ago so I'm not suspecting any surprises with this one. A tin of GLP Maltese Falcon A tin of Kramer's Father Dempsey A 2oz pouch of C&D Autumn Evening A 2oz pouch of C&D Cherry Black Cavendish A jar of MacBaren's...

Try More Blends or Cellar What I Know?

Consider that at any B&M they'll encourage you to sample a bowl or two of any of their bulk blends gratis, and if there's a pipe club meeting there, they'll often leave an open tin or two of whatever they were passing around at the last meeting for sampling. Or at least that's the way things...

    They're all picnics!

    Who Picnics?

One particular picnic I remember was at Eagle Lake New Mexico, along the Enchanted Circle route. Enchanted is the right word for it---it's an absolutely glorious scenic by-way. IIRC, our first picnic together was at Friant Dam overlooking Millerton Lake. This was long before 9-11 so the Dam was...

    Are Burley Smokers a Breed?

The old boys who mentored me during my early days as a piper were adamant that I start off with a simple rough cut Burley until being competent with the basics a packing, keeping the thing lit, etc... before experimenting with different tobaccos I have no idea why, but I did and now when I have...

    Who Picnics?

The picnic basket (or whatever it is---a Brit I know calls it a" hamper") is a subject all it's own. I do know there are some very expensive ones with the whole nine yards---wine glasses, china, silverware etc... We've never felt the temptation or had the disposable income to indulge though...

    Who Picnics?

Quite a few really good Al fresco places come to mind I remember having fresh papaya and Puerto Rican coffee for breakfast right on the beach in San Juan. There was a memorable hamburger at a place called McWank's in, I think, Watson Lake, BC And a wonderful fried Calamari sandwich at a little...

    Who Picnics?

I've enjoyed many a 6" Subway Spicy Italian (hold the mayo) in a park. The ducks can get a little intimidating though!

    Who Picnics?

One issue that has been a concern of mine is the use of public grills. Say you're on a road trip and instead of fast food, you opt for a picnic. Since the object is to get from point A to point B there isn't the opportunity or motivation to take one's time and compose a picnic feast, where as...

    Who Picnics?

Here's a history of the picnic table you might find interesting, in spite of the first illustration https://placesjournal.org/article/an-illustrated-history-of-the-picnic-table/?cn-reloaded=1&cn-reloaded=1
