I have noticed that some times, I get quite a lot of smoke coming out of the chamber of my pipe. Other times there is none. Can this be a sign that I am smoking too hot/fast, or does this have other reasons?

If you have a good pack and the pipe has good air flow air can enter from the stem and flow out from the chamber causing smoke to form. To me its a sign of a good pack and a great pipe. It shouldn't continue on its own for very long.
Thanks!
I also sometimes suspect the wind gets it smoking, but today it was only a very light breeze, and sometimes even stronger winds won't affect the amount of smoke coming out of the chamber. So it is not consistent, but it makes sense that there are multiple factors in play
