I have this Stanwell pipe I got years ago in a trade. It was unsmoked. I've smoked it about 10x, but it's not for me.
Doing research ive found nearly nothing about this pipe. As far as I can tell it's one of their Specialty lines called "Facet". I believe its shape 194, has a brass band and made between 1970s-1990s. None of this may be correct, but that's what Pipedia and Pipephil got me. What you see is all the nomenclature, nothing else.
I don't know if this is a $50 pipe or a $500 pipe.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks for looking.

I have nothing to shed light, but that's a damn fine job on the blast. I have a Vario, but the blast is nowhere near as defined.

One of the things that I love about Stanwell, is that you can get a pipe designed by one of the legends of Danish pipemaking at a very low price. The resale on Stanwells is not very good. They were started to compete dirrectly with Brittish pipes, mostly Dunhill, but they were not very successful in staying in that higher price bracket. Meanwhile, their pipemakers were bringing a premium price after they left Stanwell. Go figure.

They do have some very sought after lines of pipes, but they bring nothing remotely close to Brittish prices in resale. I have several of their bamboo pipes, which I was able to get with a bid of less than $90.

I would say the pipe's value is closer to $50, but check out other auctions on eBay.

A very 60’s-70’s look!

Stanwell resale prices have risen sharply over the last ten years, but are still quite reasonable. The craftsmanship of the pre-STG pipes is excellent and the cornucopia of styles is tantalizing!

I collected Stanwell pipes for a while until the prices started to rise. I have quite a few 62, 63 and 64 examples.

My two cents. It seems Stanwell uses that type of marking on models they consider iconic. I have a Rhodesian that shares with yours the fact that it has sandblasted parts combined with smooth parts. The markings are the same: Stanwell, made in Denmark, and the Shape name. No numbers or anything. The font that says Facet on yours and Rhodesian on mine is the same. Based on the type of box mine came in, I'd say it's from the 70s or 80s.

I've been offered a collection of pipes and could use some help. I am aware of what all of them are except for 4 Stanwells, about which I know little. They are bulldogs and all shape "32", which the owner makes a big deal over as he says they no longer make that shape and they're "valuable". Any of you able to shed some light on this? Thanks puffy

Definitely NOT an expert, but

Stanwell has quite a few Bulldog and Rhodesian shapes.
The Shape 32 straight Bulldog is the most commonly found one in their lineup.
Pops up on EBay all the time

I don’t know if this would be of any help but on the European market- this pipe would go for 160-220€, depending on who sells it. As to the US market - who knows… sometimes I find pipes on the us eBay for half the European price and sometimes 7-8 times more expensive 🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks for all the info. I did get all 4 pipes as part of a package which included quite a bit of tobacco. I would say I have about $150 to $200 in them. I've smoked a couple and they're ok, but I have a feeling they will get better when broken in. I have to say I'm impressed with the quality and workmanship considering their price. It says on the net that the stems are vulcanite, but they sure do look and feel like lucite. Anyone know for sure? puffy

If they say "made in Denmark" they most likely are vulcanite, though they did switch to acrylic for most of their stems in their last years in Denmark.

All Italian made "Danish Design" Stanwell pipes have acrylic stems, except for the churchwarden stems on the Hans Christian Andersen line of pipes (IIRC).

Stanwell always used high quality vulcanite, which is slightly harder and denser than your typical vulcanite stem.

It's been over a month since I got the 4 Stanwells. I've made it a project to break them in so I've been smoking the hell out to them... each one 2 or 3 times a day. Now with that kind of use you would think they would be getting wet and nasty, but it's just the opposite. They all smoke perfectly dry and clean. I seldom even run a pipe cleaner through them. They do seem to be a little slow to cake up in the bowl but that's ok because they are tasting better all the time. (Been smoking Half & Half or Raleigh exclusively in them). So, if you're looking for a new briar at a reasonable price I would recommend them. puffy
