What's more, I'd say C&D is undisputedly the single biggest proponent and promoter of the "cellaring" process and actively advertise their blends as being designed for such, so when this happens doing just that it shouldn't be blamed on the consumer (unless, again, kept in objectively bad conditions)
This is fairly new for them.
When the tin in question was made, C&D was not overtly marketing for cellaring like they do now.

I also have had problems with C&D tins in the past, to the point where I stopped cellaring them. Now, if I but any C&D, it is for immediate consumption. May be counter intuitive, but Peretti’s paint style cans have worked very well for me.

I keep my tins in a China cabinet. I live in Michigan so it does get pretty humid in the summer.I put one of those Arm @ Hammer moister absorber containers in there. Hopefully that will keep humidity lower in the cabinet and less chance of rusting tins in the future. Has anyone els done similar?

There’s nothing new about this. I posted images of C&D corroded tins several years ago.

Certain blends, like Haddo’s, and Bohemian Scandal, and others, rot their tins from the inside out.

Often there’s no telltale signs on the exterior of the tin, just occasionally a bit of pink stain on the label from the rust underneath.

I’ve long since decanted the tins into Mylar for storage, and have stopped buying vintage GL Pease tins after too many disappointments.

Good intel from a seasoned smoker. I guess it is time I open and hopefully smoke that tin of Stonehenge Flake from the original run in the early aughts. Saw one on Tinbids recently that had me shocked at the proposed sale price.

That sucks. In your experience/what you know of it.. is it just those certain blends or more widespread?

Also do you know if they've changed their tins going forward since then?

I don't know on the 2008 8oz tin; I've not seen problems like this with the 8oz tins. There were issues on the tall, narrow pre-2004 GLP tins (before both C&D and GLP converged on the present 2oz tin in 2004).

For funsies, I just cracked a 2006 tin of GLP Fillmore. It's perfect; tobacco is perfect and no sign of corroding in the tin. 19 years old. See attached.

From what what I gathered from other pipe smokers at the time I posted this, it seemed to be confined to Pease's early Syrian blends like the aforementioned Bohemian Scandal, Renaissance, and Raven's Wing. Haddos, Caravan, and Cumberland were also mentioned.

C&D did make changes to their tins, adding a barrier between the tobacco and the metal along the side walls, then adding a barrier to the bottom and top surfaces in addition, by 2005. However, the solder joint isn't covered and will corrode.

Some years back, Greg changed his recommendation from leaving the tobacco in the tin to age, to jarring it as soon as possible and aging in the jar, in a letter that he posted to Mike Glukler's Briar Blues blog site. His cited reason was too many "disappointments" in his personal cellar.

My 2011 and 2013 16oz tins of Haddos both showed the beginnings of corrosion at the solder joint. I'm glad that I put the contents into Mylar. Wish I'd done it sooner. The corrosion issues seem to be limited to a handful of Greg's blends, from what I've been told by other smokers.

For what it's worth, let me say that the tobacco in the posted tin was gently rehydrated just to the point where you could tell it was taking on a bit of moisture. I tried it in a meerschaum, hoping that it might be tolerable. It's one of the best smokes I've ever had in my friggin' life. Call me wild and crazy, but I'm going to let all my tins rot out now.

Which blend was it? Haddo's goes absolutely irredeemably vile when dried out in a failed tin.

(later this evening with the rest of your tins sitting patiently on the kitchen counter.)

I’d advise against smoking it unless you collect wildly nasty taste sensations that are hard to forget. Think sour Haddo’s with a dose of rust.
Think I caught it in the nick of time. It had those specks on the bottom of the tin, but hadn't quite perforated. In any case, the tobacco was still moist as hell. Man, this stuff is RICH. I could eat it.
