I just bought a couple of estate pipes. Both had these. Are they filters of some kind? I've never seen them before.
Thanks

I'm just guessing but it looks like some kind of stinger to fit into the tennon. They are quite common on older pipes. I guess you could call them filters but commonly referred to as "stingers". Some are fixed and some easily removed, these, if stingers, are obviously of the later. Many smokers remove them.

Edit...Re-reading your post it sounds like they were in the pipes already, correct? if so, they are definitely stingers.

That's a Pipodelphian Martini Olive Bone Whistle.
If you blow through it to the tune of the McDonald's jingle, it magically exorcises most ghosts from all pipes within fifteen feet (and sends them to haunt other things).

Probably works as a stinger too. At its age, the magic is probably gone anyway.

I go with stinger, which was popular in many styles and varieties. Some were more effective than others.
Kaywoodie used multiple holed stingers and old Grabow's had paddle type (which I like). The ball ended stingers seem to be prone to clog. I have a few Kaywoodies and don't smoke them as often as I do my old Graybows.
