There were 3,677 threads just deleted. The post counts get adjusted too.
I’m a new member and I must say I rather appreciated the welcoming posts that I received, although I can see how they could be used to game the system. Once a member is established here, the post probably gets annoying, but from a new member’s perspective, it was very inviting for 20 or so members to reach out to me at the outset when this new site (to me) was at its most daunting. I see both sides of the issue, of course.

Interesting development
I don’t care one way or the other. But it is humorous to ask, is it just not a wee bit questionable that within an environment of a dwindling pastime and an ever shrinking commercial industry, a community that can only hope for more adherents to consume more pipes and more tobaccos and visit pipe smoking websites in greater numbers for the benefit of advertisers, that some prefer for new members just to merge on in, sneakily and unannounced, and remove the solitary dedicated thread to introduce themselves and be welcomed, however trivial and superficial and annoying it might be? I didn’t perceive the harm and drawback that so many others did. I find the elimination of that thread surprising, ironic, and misplaced, but not really of any major consequence. It is an observation, not a criticism.

Well, there's other issues people don't talk about with welcome thread.

Someone may come on new, not post an intro in the welcome forum, and people would piss and moan about them not posting an intro, even though no intro would add any relevant details to their question at hand. And if the idea were that if they posted an intro, they'd more likely stick around, that wasn't happening. They'd eventually get their question answered and leave regardless. Forcing people who are transactional to post there before answering them doesn't make them any less transactional, they still just leave after they get what they want.

But it seemed like to me that some used the existence of that subforum and someone's lack of posting an intro as an excuse to be a dick. Though, that wasn't a terribly common behavior.

I've also seen on forums before where someone, particularly new people, will try to immediately boost their post count by posting in every welcome thread no matter how old and irrelevant it's become.

This looks like a good thread to introduce myself in.

I live in Virginia currently, but I am from all over and have been a pipe smoker for ~15 years. I began my pipe smoking journey with a MM Legend and a bag of Admiral’s Choice from Walgreen’s under the tutelage of a codger so mean and bellicose that he wouldn’t have lasted two posts on any forum (good guy).

Turn ons: English, VaPers, Red Virginias, large billiards.

Turn offs: Cherry anything, YouTube and podcast videos which involve too much pontification.

What is the most annoying is that there is no requirement to put your location in your profile and yet if you are new, your first response is:

Please put your location in your Profile!

How: Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down.

And half the time, the location is entirely irrelevant to whatever the person is talking about.

Though it is annoying if people are asking about availability and not putting their location and also not saying it in the post itself. That I do get, but just the blanket "put your location" to me seems kind of, eh... as well as the presumption that one is "paranoid" if they don't want to.

There was only one moderator that did that and he has not been a moderator for six months now.

Setting aside the topics of padding your post count and bringing up old threads, there are alternatives to blocking out forums if they annoy you. When I use this site, I mostly go straight to New Posts. And, for instance, if I do not want to read any more posts from the General Discussion forum, I simply go into it, mark the forum as read and I will no longer see any new posts for that entire forum in the New Posts section. If I later want to go in and read in that forum again, I go back into it and select a thread to read and that will reset it to show new posts.
