Looking to try a Virginia tobacco blend. I currently smoke Peterson Early Morning Pipe and Nightcap, and would like to try one of their Virginia blends.

Has anyone tried their flake and Royal Yacht Mixture? And if so what are your thoughts and recommendations?

They are night and day.
Flake - Dunhill Light Flake, in days gone by - is a classic "all-day" smoke. It's not overwhelming in either flavor or nicotine; it's interesting enough for multiple bowls in one day.
Royal Yacht is higher in nicotine, and has a noted flavor that many find unpleasant, although a lot of folks love it.
I could not begin to tell you how many tins of Flake I have smoked over the past 20 years. I have my first tin of RY open; I've been slowly smoking it for several months. I won't buy another.
Try them both and find out.

Wow, that does not sound promising for Royal Yacht.

Also, I realise Peterson/Dunhill do or have made several flakes over the years.

My query is related specifically to the flake pictured below.

Yeah, I missed that my phone corrected it to University instead of Peterson. Either way, I found the flake to be like a Honda accord. Does everything ok and nothing great. It's a decent smoke just overall unremarkable to me. RY is one of my favorite special occasions tins but it is a bit polarizing in terms of flavor. If you like it, you will likely love it.

Very different tobaccos.

Many would think much more highly of the Peterson Flake than of Royal Yacht, but (VA lover though I be) I did not find PF to be remotely my kind of VA. Unfortunately a why-bother smoke to my palate.
Whereas RY -- while also not remotely like my typical sort of VA -- I found very appreciable in its own idiom. I smoke it now and then and like it.

So you'll just have to try both to see what you like.

Haven’t tried Peterson Flake and I put off trying RY for years because of negative press. What a loss! When I finally tried it, I kicked myself for not trying it sooner. It’s not a typical VA but has great body and flavor and doesn’t get hot even when pushed. Definitely worth a try.

My experience echos that of many here. The two tobaccos are made up of Virginias, but differ drastically. I enjoy Royal Yacht, but rarely find myself reaching for it. I think it's worth a try, some people really love it.

I also personally like the Flake, but in my opinion there are better options (such as GLP Union Square for a pure VA, and Capstan Blue for a lightly cased European-style flake).

Yeah, Peterson Flake, which used to be Dunhil Flake, which used to be Dunhill Light Flake.

As I mentioned, a classic "all-day" smoke.

Royal Yacht is in my top ten of all time. The casing is plummy, tangy, and some have speculated that it is actually perique juice as the tobacco itself is straight Virginia which normally is not as strong in nicotine as Royal Yacht. It’s a fantastic smoke and I’m afraid you’re being misled by many of the comments so far that have indicated that it’s anything less than excellent.

Peterson Flake is also an excellent straight Virginia delivered in the flake style, but compared to RY, is kinda... boring. It has the hay and grain notes that are comforting and smoke great. But it’s missing the zing and pizzazz of the Yacht.

I had never before heard that theory about the RY topping being perique juice. I really like the idea just because it's so obscure and unique. Also it would be a brilliant use of the juice that must certainly be produced (and otherwise discarded) in the perique-making process.

However, even if this is part of the answer (and I hope that it is), I'm fairly confident that it can't be the whole answer, as there is a sort of berry-esque flavor in there as well that couldn't be entirely accounted for in this way.

So RY = more nicotine and more flavour
Flake = less nicotine and smoother

As previously mentioned, I currently smoke EMP and Nightcap. Where does Peterson flake and RY fit in around these two?

Someone, I think Pipestud?, has claimed that both blends use the same base tobaccos, just that the processing and top-flavoring is different. I'll have to try them side-by-side next time I have both open...
Must be an imposter on board.

There must be an imposter on board here, or, I'm getting older than I thought and don't remember saying that. However, I do think if I poured that wonderful Royal Yacht essence on top of a bowl of Dunhill Flake, it sure would enhance the smoke!!!

I think this is what I was thinking of -- apologies if I misrepresented your words!
