New addition to my "family" . . . my Birthday Present to myself. Not an addition, but I'm in a gradual refinement of my pipe collection. About 8 or so refinements planned when I'm able. When I add, I'll be giving away the pipe it replaces to one of my friends. This beautiful Rhodesian Meer replaces my very nice Rhodesian entry level Brigham, which I do smoke quite a bit; it's an excellent pipe. And so forth it will go until my stable is where I wish it to be. I'm perfectly satisfied with what I have, but as I implied, there are a few areas that need a boost. I chose the Rhodesian style because I love the way they fit in the hand.

This meer was bought from the same source as my other larger meer, and I plan on biasing it for Balkan style tobaccos, which I smoke a lot and really like. Now that I'm growing (apparently successfully) my own Turkish Balkans, and planning on adding Virginias as well (more on that later :ROFLMAO: ) I'll be smoking more of the Balkan style, whatever that is. Needless to say, more Balkan mixes from homegrowns will be added.

This was made by the same maker as my other larger meer, and dates from the 1950s. The quality and smokability of the original is so good, that I took the plunge. Forgot the maker's name, but I'll dig it up and post it when I have my first smoke in it, which will be Dunhill's Nightcap. Apparently, it may even be cut from the same meer block.

ETA is about the end of the month. 😁

Today is good and bad tastes day. The bad: First, the last bowl yesterday and first bowl today was Sutliff Sweated in the EA Carey Super Bowl pot, but todays bowl has me out in sprinkles, and just a couple of light drops on the top of the bowl changed the taste to have an overbearing raw cucumber taste…and I hate them and am allergic. Dried, smoked and down past the top layer of the bowl, all was well and ordinary, but…cucumber notes? Really? How is that possible? Strange science, this tobacco taste business.

And the good taste bit: unintentionally tried the “delayed gratification“ thing with Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey. For those unfamiliar, it’s mostly Virginias, with calabash, and the bourbon added for a light top note. Had to do something emergently, and then it was bedtime and no time to smoke a bowl of this stuff in the Blue Dublin Balandis with bent stem and military mount I’d loaded up. Just had toasted and puffed several times before the interruption, and it sat until afternoon today. The delay made those virginias sing sweet and sour, as if they were in a top 5 VaPer. I thought that technique was all BS, but now I’m a believer it works at least some of the time with some blends.
