This straight grain that I received from Ken Barnes in 2018 when Ken was getting back into pipe making:

This 1883 Barling magnum that I got from Ken after helping him out with some pipe history questions:

And the last one I don't have an image of. It's a Brebbia AVANTI that I picked up for $2 on eBay, that is a magic pipe, one that practically smokes itself. Anything I put in it smokes wonderfully well, and delivers excellent flavors.

Being one who prefers meers (and if for some strange reason I had to choose just one) I'd have to go with the Yanik in my avatar.

It was the first of his I purchased, and in addition to the magnificent carving which I absolutely love, it is also (fortunately) drilled correctly and smokes great.

Without doubt, my Sarome Cambridge 60, aka The Beater. Smokes anything superbly, full flavours, I would be aghast if anything bad were to happen to it. I recently found the receipt for it, £21 about 4 years ago (£38 now, word got out how good they are, still bargains).

I will never give up this pipe:

It smokes its dedicated blend Tillerman perfectly and seeing as how I have more Tillerman than any other blend, I’m likely going to have the stuff around for decades, and thusly will need this pipe. It also has not seen too many bowls smoked through, I think fifteen so far, but it has already started to reach that magical time in a meer’s progress where now it has taken on the scents of the tobacco(s) smoked, so it now sports the warm scent of cocoa. I’m in love with this pipe.

I am never getting rid of any pipe. I'm not sure I understand this whole, buy a pipe and then sell it thing. It's not like the company has to keep updating its system for it to work.

I do sort of understand people living in houses so tiny that they just can't more than one pipe inside it. But, on the other hand they could just pick up more cardboard and extend their houses.

Beautiful piece, how's it coloring?

Most of Yanik's pipes have the unbleached wax coloring as in the pics when new, so they do not color when smoked in the manner of white meers.

This Castello cherrywood has no sentimental value but it is the most reliable smoker I have. From the first bowl I don't think I've had a bad smoke with it. The bottom picture is how it looks after many years of continual use.

Do you know that parable of the shepherd with 100 sheep, but one is lost and all he can think about is finding the lost one? That's me and my pipes, the one that is missing is the one I can't do without.

I actually have two, and for very different reasons.
The first is an old Calabash shaped Caminetto Business. I almost never smoke it because it smokes terribly for me. My Dad smoked a pipe for years and this was his favorite pipe. It brings back so many memories of going with him to Camelot (an old tobacco shop) and helping him decide what tobaccos he should buy after sniffing every jar in the place, then sitting at his feet while he smoked it in his recliner watching Quincy or Maverick. He hasn’t smoked anything in years, but I’ll always have those memories and that pipe.


The other is simply for its own merits. Its my first commission from Jesse Jones and my own favorite pipe. If there is such a thing as a “Magic Pipe” this is it for me. My wife has been told I want in my casket.

Though most of my pipes are commissioned artisan pieces, this Savinelli Alligator 904 is completely immune from being thrown away. My youngest daughter picked it out for me when she was four years old and my dad smoked it the last time I spoke to him before he passed away.

I have this shape as well and love it. Is there a trick to not having the rim closest to me char so badly? The ember seems to always gravitate toward me when smoking rather than staying in the middle. This is the only pipe that this happens on for me so I feel like I'm packing this shape incorrectly. I'm also careful with the soft flame as well so I don't think this is lighting char. Is this common on canted bowls since the rim is further forward than the draft hole?

This little no-name Italian pipe has served me well for 10 years. I'm not even sure it is Italian, and I have no clear memory of buying it at all! But it is a sweet smoker!

I used to collect them exclusively and never had the issue. Sounds more like rim buildup.
