Ah, the Kinks. You see, as kids, one moment all we had was Frank Ifield (RIP and no disrespect) or The Singing Nun and steam radio, the next thing it was The Beatles like a space age rocket launch, then this tidal wave of the Kinks, the Stones, the Who and all else. That transition from 1962 to 1964 was awesome; the soundtrack to our lives and expectations.

Go a lot of time for the Kinks.

The heyday for the Kinks was in the mid-60s to mid-70s and I think they started declining because of the internal strife in the band. If I remember correctly they were even banned from touring in the US for several years because one of them took a swing at someone from the American Music Federation. That ban hurt the bands popularity in the U.S. in my opinion.

The Kinks really didn't have that many good songs - Lola, Sunny Afternoon and You Really Got Me Now - so it's no real surprise that they aren't heard over the "airwaves" more. That being said, I hear them played on a few channels on Sirius XM and local classic rock or oldies FM station.

Many moons ago I was enjoying a pint in the famous St. Agnes (Cornwall) pub The Driftwood Spars and got chatting to some friendly looking chap about music (it was a live venue in the evenings).

Only after he had left the barman asked if I knew who I was talking to, I said I didn't have a clue. Turned out it was Dave Davies, brother and co founder of the Kinks Ray Davies.

Agreed. "I'm Not Like Everyone Else" - The Kinks hit list is extremely extensive - most people don't realize just how often they are hearing a Kink's song. Just yesterday I they were playing A Gallon of Gas and Superman over the PA.

I love the 80’s, just listening to The Hooters and dancing all over the house. Kinks are a 60’s band but I love their music, quality British rock.
Hooters dropped an album back in '07 that was quite impressive....didn't find out till '17 cause I'm such a huge fan 🙂

Obviously to me the kinks were just a middle of the road band if that, I enjoy 50's and early 60's rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, traditional country music, as well as bluegrass music. I do like the big band sound of the 40's and I do like some very traditional opera.

They have to be one of my favorite bands. Not sure why they are not getting more play on the classic stations around here. I mean, as I age, I'm listening to more and more old bands and singers. But I still find that they are the same music I listened back in 80s.
they've always been just a step too artistically awesome over pop stuff.

I grew up in 80s and the Kinks were on the radio a fair bit. Must be the station I was listening to. Some of their songs are great, just not being played enough for people to find them.

Some of the Kinks' lyrics are priceless:

Sunny Afternoon

The taxman's taken all my dough
And left me in my stately home
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
And I can't sail my yacht
He's taken everything I've got
All I've got's this sunny afternoon.

Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze
I've got a big fat momma trying to break me
And I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazin' on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

My girlfriend's run off with my car
And gone back to her ma and pa
Tellin' tales of drunkenness and cruelty
Now I'm sittin' here
Sippin' at my ice-cool beer
Lazin on a sunny afternoon.

Help me, help me, help me sail away
Or give me two good reasons why I oughta stay
'Cause I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazin' on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze
I got a big fat momma trying to break me
And I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazin' on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime

OK, no more unless requested....

Lola

I met her in a club down in old Soho where you
Drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-Cola C-O-L-A cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said
Lola L-O-L-A Lola Lo lo lo lo Lo - la

Well I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola la-la-la-la Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man
Oh my Lola la-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola

Well, we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candle light
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said "Dear boy won't you come home with me? "
Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy,
But when I looked in her eyes, well I almost fell for my
Lola Lo lo lo lo Lo - la Lo lo lo lo Lo - la
Lola Lo lo lo lo Lo - la Lo lo lo lo Lo - la

I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me

Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
La-la-la-la Lola

Chorus #2:
Well I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said "Dear boy, I'm gonna make you a man"

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am in the bed, I'm a man
And so is Lola
La-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola
Lola la-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola
